Modesto Bus Schedule: Routes, Times & Stops

Modesto’s public bus system is The S, operated by the Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority (StanRTA). It provides local routes around Modesto and regional connections to Ceres, Turlock, Riverbank, Oakdale, Patterson, Stockton, ACE Rail and Dublin/Pleasanton BART.

To find your next bus, open the official StanRTA route directory, choose your route number, then match the direction, weekday or weekend timetable and boarding stop. This guide brings together actual timetable examples, a $2 local all-day fare, route maps, live tracking, commuter connections and accessibility information.

Quick answer

Where Can I Find the Modesto Bus Schedule?

The official StanRTA Routes & Schedules directory lists Modesto’s local and regional bus routes, including individual route maps and weekday, Saturday and Sunday timetables.

For a specific trip, follow this order:

1 Choose route Find 21, 22, 25, 90 or your required route.
2 Pick direction Confirm your destination or loop direction.
3 Select day Weekday, Saturday, Sunday or special service.
4 Find stop Read the closest official timepoint or stop.
5 Check live Recheck Track The S before leaving.
The S replaced the former MAX and StaRT brands. Older websites, bus guides or search results may still refer to Modesto Area Express (MAX) or Stanislaus Regional Transit (StaRT). These systems were combined under StanRTA, now branded as The S. Use the current StanRTA website rather than an old MAX timetable.

There is no single start or end time for every Modesto bus. Route 21 may run more frequently than an intercity route, while a BART commuter coach follows a limited departure schedule.

Modesto Bus Routes: The S Route Numbers and Destinations

The S operates local, regional and commuter services. The route list below summarizes destinations from the official StanRTA directory. Some routes serve schools, shopping centers, hospitals or neighboring cities, while others provide commuter connections to rail systems.

21 West Modesto / Paradise Sutter, Rouse, Carpenter, Robertson and Modesto High School area. A frequent local loop with weekday and weekend schedules.
22 McHenry / Vintage Faire Mall McHenry Village, Rumble, Standiford, Vintage Faire Mall. Use outbound for the mall and inbound for downtown.
23 McHenry / Kiernan McHenry Village, Walmart and northern McHenry Avenue. Check the destination before boarding because Route 22 also uses McHenry.
24 Empire / Riverbank Yosemite, Creekwood, Roselle, Morrill and Oakdale Road. Check both terminal and direction.
25 Downtown / Vintage Faire Mall La Loma, Orangeburg, Sisk, Doctors Medical Center and Amtrak area. This is a different mall corridor from Route 22.
26 Paradise / Carpenter Loop Modesto High School, Central Catholic High School and surrounding neighborhoods. Read the stop sequence because it is a loop route.
29 Modesto / Ceres Ceres Walmart Transit Hub, Hatch Road and residential areas. Check whether you need Route 29 or the 29T Turlock extension.
30 Downtown / Vintage Faire Mall MJC East, College, Prescott, Rumble, Standiford and Dale. Different path from Routes 22, 25 and 31.
31 Downtown / Vintage Faire Mall Tully, Snyder, Pelandale, Sisk and Davis High School. Use the mall back-entrance stop information.
32 Downtown / Beyer area Memorial Medical Center, Downey High School, Oakdale and Sylvan. Useful for some medical appointments; verify the closest hospital entrance.
33 MJC West / MJC East Modesto Junior College, Woodland, Blue Gum and Social Security office area. Check the campus and direction.
37 Scenic / Vintage Faire Oakdale, Roselle, McHenry, Rumble and Vintage Faire Mall. Another mall route with different local stops.

42 Downtown / Ceres Community Services Agency, Hackett, Crows Landing and Ceres Walmart Transit Hub. Check the correct direction toward Ceres or downtown.
47 Southwest Modesto / Ceres Hatch, Mitchell and residential areas. Useful alternative for some South Modesto–Ceres trips.
48 Modesto / Salida Vintage Faire, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and Salida Regional Library. Check the mall-side boarding point and Salida direction.
50 Modesto / Waterford / Hickman Yosemite Boulevard, Empire and Waterford. Regional intervals can be wider than urban routes.
60 Modesto / Riverbank / Oakdale Riverbank, Oakdale and Highway 108 corridor. Check the actual destination of each trip.
61 Modesto / Ceres / Hughson Ceres Walmart and Hughson High School area. Allow enough time for intercity connections.
70 ACE Commuter Modesto, Manteca and Lathrop/Manteca ACE station. Weekday commuter trips; coordinate with ACE train times.
80 Stockton Commuter Manteca Transit Center and Stockton Transit Center. Primarily weekday commuter service.
90 Modesto / BART Tracy Hills and Dublin/Pleasanton BART station. Special commuter fares apply; check weekday and weekend departures.
Do not choose a route from its number alone. Routes 22, 25, 30, 31 and 37 can all be useful for Vintage Faire Mall, but they serve different neighborhoods. The closest route to your home may not be the fastest route from downtown.

Why the Time at My Stop May Be Different

StanRTA tables often list selected timepoints, not every stop along a route. If your stop is between two displayed intersections, the exact boarding time must be checked in the live tracker or route trip planner.

For a broader explanation of route numbers, destination signs, timepoints and why bus schedules differ from live arrivals, see our transit bus schedule and stop-reading guide. It is particularly useful when comparing a local Modesto loop with an express commuter route.

How to Find Your Exact Bus Stop on a Map

  1. Open the official route directory or system map.
  2. Find the route serving your destination.
  3. Identify your nearest stop or transit center.
  4. Confirm which direction the bus travels from that location.
  5. Check the stop against the current route-specific map.
  6. Use Track The S to review the next estimated arrival.
  7. Follow the physical stop sign and any temporary relocation notice.

For walking directions, transfers and choosing the correct street-side stop, our Google Maps bus directions and stop-finding guide explains how to use Transit mode, read the complete journey and verify a scheduled departure.

Local destination finder

Which Modesto Bus Goes to the Mall, Hospital or College?

Many riders search by destination rather than route number. The following route clues come from StanRTA’s official descriptions, but the nearest stop may still require walking or an additional connection.

Destination Useful routes What to check
Vintage Faire Mall 22, 25, 30, 31, 37 Different neighborhoods and mall-side stop locations.
Doctors Medical Center 25 Hospital-side stop and final pedestrian route.
Memorial Medical Center 32 Correct medical center entrance and accessible stop.
Modesto Junior College 30, 31, 33 East versus West campus.
Modesto Amtrak area 25 and other connections where applicable Train station stop and train connection time.
Ceres Walmart Transit Hub 29, 42, 47, 61 Route variation, stop and return departure.
CSU Stanislaus / Turlock 10 and Turlock connections Turlock Transit Center and onward campus trip.
Dublin/Pleasanton BART 90 Commuter pass, boarding stop and rail connection.
For appointments, allow a walking buffer. A route serving a hospital, school or shopping center may stop outside the main entrance. Check the exact pedestrian path, especially when traveling with a wheelchair, stroller or mobility aid.

Downtown Modesto Transit Center: Address, Bays and Transfers

Downtown Modesto Transit Center is the main transfer hub for The S. Its customer-service office is located at:

Saturday: 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Sunday: 9:00 AM–4:30 PM

Office hours are not the operating hours of every bus route.

How to Find the Correct Bus Bay

The official system map shows multiple bus islands and designated route groups at the transit center. The map also specifically instructs riders to use walkways when crossing between islands.

  1. Enter the designated transit center pedestrian area.
  2. Find the route and bay information signs.
  3. Check the bus’s route number and destination.
  4. Use the marked walkways to cross between bus islands.
  5. Stand in the proper waiting area, not a bus driving lane.
  6. Confirm the bus’s final destination before paying or boarding.
Do not cross through moving-bus areas. The official transit center map directs riders to use walkways between islands. Give yourself extra transfer time rather than crossing an unsafe area to catch a departing bus.

Vintage Faire Mall Boarding Detail

The S system map identifies mall-area bus boarding at the back entrance for several routes. Do not assume your departing bus uses the same driveway as regular shopping-center traffic or the same stop as another bus line.

Open the official system map’s mall-area detail and confirm the latest route instructions before traveling.

Current published fare structure

Modesto Bus Fares: $2 All Day, Discount Passes and Free Youth Travel

One useful difference between The S and many city bus systems is its published $2 regular fixed-route fare, which covers unlimited trips for the day.

Regular all-day fare $2.00 Unlimited eligible fixed-route trips that day.
Half-fare all-day $1.00 Qualified seniors, disabled riders and other eligible riders.
Youth ages 0–18 Free Free travel under the published youth fare policy.
Eligible MJC students Free Current valid student identification required.

Modesto Bus Pass Prices

Pass Regular fare Half fare Validity
1-Day Pass $2.00 $1.00 Unlimited eligible fixed-route trips for one day.
7-Day Pass $10.00 $5.00 Seven consecutive days after activation.
31-Day Pass $40.00 $20.00 31 consecutive days after activation.
BART Commuter 1-Day $15.00 Check eligibility Same-day round-trip commuter pass.
BART Commuter 31-Day $165.00 Check eligibility 31-day commuter pass.
ADA Paratransit $2.50 Program-specific One-way eligible paratransit trip.
Important BART commuter distinction Do not assume the $2 local fixed-route fare pays for the Modesto–Dublin/Pleasanton BART commuter service. Route 90 has its own published $15 same-day round-trip and $165 monthly commuter pass prices.

Who Can Receive the Half Fare?

The S lists reduced-fare eligibility for qualifying seniors aged 65 or older, people with disabilities, Medicare card holders and veterans with qualifying identification. The driver may request proof of eligibility.

The official fare page provides the accepted identification types. Check the latest rules before using a discounted fare.

Official real-time information

Track The S: Live Modesto Bus Arrivals and Vehicle Locations

StanRTA provides Track The S, a real-time bus tracking system. It uses GPS and timetable data to display vehicle positions and estimated arrivals at stops across The S fixed-route network.

1 Open tracker Start from the official StanRTA tracking page.
2 Find route Choose your bus number.
3 Check direction Match the destination.
4 Select stop Choose the exact boarding point.
5 Recheck live Review arrivals and rider alerts.

Open the official Track The S real-time bus tracker.

Track The S Mobile App

StanRTA also directs riders to its mobile tracking tools, including Track The S or StanRTA myStop, depending on the device and available app version.

These tools can help riders check route locations, upcoming arrivals and relevant notices.

Scheduled Time vs Live Arrival

Scheduled departure The time listed in the official timetable. It is the planned service, not a guarantee that the bus is physically approaching.
Real-time prediction A newer estimated arrival calculated using available tracking data. It may change because of traffic, detours, delays or GPS interruptions.
If the bus disappears from the tracker A missing vehicle location does not always mean the scheduled trip has been canceled. Check rider alerts, the official timetable and customer service when necessary.

Rider Alert Notifications

Track The S also provides access to rider alerts and text or email notifications. These are especially useful for regular commuters who want to monitor their usual route.

Open StanRTA Rider Tools, select Real Time Bus Tracker or Rider Alerts, and follow the route-selection instructions.

Regional commuter connections

Modesto to BART, ACE Rail and Stockton Bus Schedules

Some Modesto passengers travel beyond Stanislaus County for work, school, medical appointments or regional rail connections. The S offers commuter routes with more limited schedules than ordinary local buses.

Route 90 — Modesto to Dublin/Pleasanton BART

The official Route 90 timetable connects Downtown Modesto Transit Center and the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station, with some trips serving the mall Park & Ride and Tracy Hills.

Day / trip Leave Modesto Arrive BART Scheduled travel time
Weekday — first listed 4:00 AM 5:50 AM 110 minutes
Weekday — later morning 5:00 AM 7:05 AM 125 minutes
Saturday — first listed 7:00 AM 8:25 AM 85 minutes
Sunday — first listed 7:00 AM 8:25 AM 85 minutes

Selected published Route 90 departures, not live running times. Highway conditions can affect arrival. Verify the BART train schedule separately.

Open the official Route 90 BART commuter weekday and weekend schedules.

Route 70 — ACE Commuter

Route 70 connects Modesto with the Lathrop/Manteca ACE station via the regional corridor. StanRTA lists commuter services Monday through Friday.

Some trips start at Modesto Transit Center while others begin at the mall Park & Ride. Check the full timetable before choosing a departure point.

Open the official Route 70 ACE commuter schedule.

Route 80 — Stockton Commuter

Route 80 connects Modesto with Manteca and Stockton Transit Center. The official StanRTA route directory identifies this service as a weekday commuter connection.

Do not assume that a local Route 80 bus operates hourly or that it offers the same frequency as a downtown Modesto neighborhood route.

Find Route 80 in the official commuter route directory.

Missed-connection risk Routes 70, 80 and 90 operate around intercity travel needs. Check the last return service, train departure, transfer walking distance and fare before relying on a connection. A missed commuter trip can require a much longer wait than a missed local Modesto bus.
Travel beyond Stanislaus County

Modesto to Merced or Fresno: Plan Both Parts of the Trip

The S connects Modesto with local and regional hubs, but it is not the public bus operator for every Central Valley city. Longer trips may require a train, an intercity connection or another local transit system.

Traveling to UC Merced?

If your journey continues toward UC Merced, plan the intercity Modesto-to-Merced portion first. Once in Merced, students and visitors can check campus shuttle services. Our UC Merced CatTracks bus schedule and campus stop guide explains the university’s current weekday and weekend shuttle patterns and which services require a valid CatCard.

Traveling to Fresno?

For travel farther south toward Fresno, first confirm the intercity rail or bus connection. Fresno’s local transit operator is Fresno Area Express, not The S. After reaching Fresno, the Fresno Area Express bus routes and timetable guide can help with connections to Downtown Fresno, Fresno State, medical facilities and other city destinations.

These are separate transit networks. The S, UC Merced CatTracks and Fresno Area Express do not share one timetable or fare system. Verify the intercity journey and the final local bus leg separately. Do not assume that a Modesto local pass pays for either university or Fresno transportation.
Disability and accessibility information

Accessible Modesto Buses, ADA Paratransit and Dial-A-Ride

StanRTA offers fixed-route transportation along with ADA Paratransit and other demand-response services. These are different programs, and riders should select the service that fits their mobility and travel requirements.

Fixed-route accessibility Check vehicle ramps, mobility-aid securement, priority seating and whether your exact stop has an accessible boarding path.
ADA Paratransit Shared-ride transportation for eligible people whose disabilities prevent them from using the fixed-route network.
Dial-A-Ride and shuttles Specialized demand-response services are available in selected communities with their own reservation requirements.

ADA Paratransit Fare and Operating Hours

StanRTA publishes a $2.50 one-way ADA Paratransit fare for a regular eligible trip, with other program-specific fare exemptions where applicable.

Day Published ADA service hours Important reservation advice
Monday–Friday 4:45 AM–11:15 PM Request next-day service by 5 PM the preceding day.
Saturday 6:15 AM–10:00 PM Check reservation office hours and pickup window.
Sunday 8:00 AM–8:15 PM Confirm your pickup and drop-off window.

How to Reserve ADA Paratransit

  1. Confirm that you have the required eligibility certification.
  2. Call 209-527-4900.
  3. Provide your pickup and destination locations.
  4. State the required travel date and approximate time.
  5. Explain any mobility-aid or personal-care-attendant needs.
  6. Confirm the assigned pickup window.
  7. Be ready for the shared-ride service at the agreed location.

StanRTA states that next-day ADA reservations must be made by 5 PM on the previous day. Some same-day requests may be considered with at least two hours’ notice, but they are subject to availability and should not be assumed guaranteed.

2026 ADA Eligibility Change

As of July 1, 2026, StanRTA and Turlock Transit partnered with ADARide for ADA Paratransit eligibility processing.

Need to apply for ADA eligibility? Call 209-284-4577 to begin the ADARide certification process. This is separate from calling StanRTA to schedule a ride after you become eligible.

Read the official ADA Paratransit eligibility, fare and reservation information.

Accessible Information Formats

StanRTA states that rider information may be requested in Spanish, large-format print and audio translations. Contact its office if the standard timetable or route map is difficult to read or use.

Service updates and travel disruptions

Modesto Bus Delays, Detours, School Service and Holiday Changes

The S routes can be affected by construction, traffic incidents, weather, special events, school-related changes and temporary stop closures. A timetable gives the planned schedule, not the guaranteed status of a bus at this moment.

Construction Street work can move stops or change the direction of a bus.
Traffic Highway 99 and other major corridors can affect running time.
Special dates Some routes may use holiday or reduced-service schedules.
School service Routes serving schools may be affected by seasonal timetable revisions.

How to Check a Route Alert

  1. Open the official StanRTA tracking page.
  2. Choose Track The S or the rider alert tool.
  3. Select the bus route you need.
  4. Look for current notices about your stop or direction.
  5. Read the operating dates and temporary stop instructions.
  6. Check the updated estimated arrival before leaving.
Same-day status limitation This guide does not claim that every Modesto bus is running normally right now. Check official alerts for your exact route and travel date before setting out, particularly for medical appointments and regional commuter connections.
Practical help

Modesto Bus Schedule Problems: What to Do

Problem Practical solution
I found an old MAX timetable. Use the current StanRTA Routes & Schedules directory because the former MAX and StaRT systems are now The S.
I do not know which bus goes to Vintage Faire. Compare Routes 22, 25, 30, 31 and 37 by your starting location. They do not use identical roads.
The route page and tracker show different times. The timetable lists planned departures. The tracker estimates current arrivals. Check rider alerts and the latest prediction.
I have only a $5 or $10 bill. Drivers do not carry change. Prepare exact cash or purchase an accepted pass through the available sales options.
My trip includes a BART connection. Use Route 90’s own timetable and commuter fare; verify the connecting BART train separately.
I missed a Sunday bus. Check the Sunday timetable rather than weekday frequency. The next departure may be significantly later.
My bus stop is difficult to access. Check stop accessibility and contact StanRTA about an accessible alternate boarding location or eligibility-based transportation.
I need to go to Turlock. Start with Route 10 or the relevant regional service, then verify the final Turlock Transit connection.
I cannot find my bus on the live map. Recheck the route, stop and direction. A missing GPS prediction does not automatically mean the service is canceled.
My return journey ends late. Find the last departure in the return direction before leaving. Do not use the final outbound time to plan the opposite trip.
