Maui Bus Routes, 2026 Timetables, Fares, Airport Service and Island Transfers
Maui Bus connects Central Maui with Wailuku, Kīhei, Wailea, West Maui, Waiheʻe, Haʻikū, Kula and Upcountry communities. The current July 2026 fixed-route schedule lists 12 numbered routes, with four additional commuter services published separately.
This guide turns the official schedules into a practical trip planner: choose the right route, understand how often it runs, find major transfer points, check the fare, track the bus live and avoid problems with luggage, bicycles, airport trips or outdated timetables.
Maui Bus fixed-route service is funded by the County of Maui Department of Transportation and operated by Roberts Hawaiʻi. The current official schedule lists Routes 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 10, 15, 23, 29, 35, 39 and 40.
Those fixed routes operate seven days a week, including holidays. A separate commuter network adds Haʻikū–Wailea, Makawao–Kapalua, Wailuku–Kapalua and Kīhei–Kapalua commuter trips.
Choose the area
Central Maui, Kīhei/Wailea, West Maui, Waiheʻe, Haʻikū, Kula or Upcountry determines which route family you need.
Check direction
Many timetables combine two directions. Confirm the destination and the correct side of the road before using a time.
Use the closest timepoint
The PDF does not list every stop. Use the official map or Maui Bus live system for intermediate stops.
Check live service
Scheduled time is only the plan. Use the official live tracker for actual vehicle location and arrival predictions.
Important route-count check: some older County pages still contain older network descriptions. The current July 2026 fixed-route schedule and the current MauiBus.org route selector list 12 fixed-route numbers, so those current sources are used here.
The County changed fixed-route fare-free eligibility on July 1, 2026 and added stops on several routes. These changes are more current than older fare summaries that still describe students as free only through age 24.
Students of any age
A student with a valid student ID can ride Maui Bus fixed routes fare-free. The previous student age limit was removed.
County employees
County of Maui employees with a valid County ID are now fare-free on fixed routes.
New Central/South Maui stops
Kīhei Islander, Kīhei Villager and Kula Islander gained stops around Puʻunēnē Avenue and Piʻikea Avenue.
New Upcountry/West stops
Upcountry Islander gained a Hāliʻimaile-area stop and West Maui Express gained a stop near The Gardens at West Maui in Nāpili.
Use the July 2026 schedule: an older PDF saved on a phone or hotel website can show a stop pattern that no longer matches the current network.
The current July 2026 schedule contains 12 fixed-route numbers. The cadence shown below describes the repeating pattern visible in the current timetable; exact stop-level times should still be checked in the PDF or live app.

Runs the Wailuku local circuit in the opposite direction, which can shorten a trip depending on which side of the loop your stop is located.
Local Kahului circulation serving shopping areas, neighborhoods and major community destinations from the transit center.

Route 6 — Kahului Loop Reverse

Reverse-direction version of the Kahului Loop. Compare Routes 5 and 6 before boarding because one direction can be substantially shorter for a local trip.
Links Kahului/Wailuku with Waiheʻe-area stops. The current schedule has much wider gaps than the hourly loops.

Not every stop is printed in the timetable. The County explicitly warns that space limitations prevent the schedule from listing every stop. Use the official route map or live app when your boarding point is between printed timepoints.

How the Maui Bus Network Connects Across the Island
The diagram below simplifies the official network into geographic corridors and transfer points. It is designed to explain connections, not replace the County’s street-level route maps.
Do not use this SVG as a street map. Stop placement, road alignment and walking access must be checked in the official Maui Bus map or live tracker.
The official July schedule marks several major transfer points. These locations are more useful for trip planning than assuming every route meets downtown.
Kahului Transit Center
The primary Central Maui hub. The current facility is at 18 Vevau Street near Kahului Public Library.
Māʻalaea Harbor Village
Useful when moving between Central/West Maui and local South Maui service.
Piʻilani Village Shopping Center
Important South Maui connection point for Kīhei-area services.
Whalers Village
Major Kaʻanapali/West Maui connection point shown on the official network map.

Transfer-payment distinction: the fixed-route schedule says transfer tickets are not issued on the regular routes. The separate County commuter-program page says there is no charge for transfers to other Maui Bus commuter routes. Treat those as two different service rules.

Maui Bus is not one uniform “every hour” network. The current timetable ranges from roughly hourly service to three-hour gaps.

Frequency is not the same as exact departure time. Always read the actual row in the July 2026 timetable, especially for Routes 8 and 39 where missing a bus can create a long delay.

Maui Bus Fares, Day Passes and Monthly Passes
The general cash fare remains simple, but the fare-free program applies only to qualifying fixed-route passengers. Commuter and ADA paratransit services have separate eligibility and payment rules.

Who Can Ride Fixed Routes Fare-Free?
Age 55 or older
Show a driver’s license, State ID or another valid ID proving age.
Students of any age
Effective July 1, 2026, students with a valid student ID have no student-age limit.
County of Maui employees
A valid County employee ID qualifies for free fixed-route boarding.
ADA paratransit cardholders
A valid Maui Bus ADA paratransit ID card qualifies for free fixed-route boarding.
Medicare cardholders
A valid Medicare ID card qualifies under the current fixed-route fare-free program.
Qualified disability / financial-need riders
A physician-certified disability card or qualifying fare-free ID can be used. MEO handles the application process for qualifying riders.
Children age 5 and younger: the current July 2026 schedule lists children 5 and under as free when accompanied by a paying passenger.
Buying a Monthly Pass
The general monthly pass is valid for one calendar month. The County states that it is available from the 25th of the previous month through the 10th of the current month.

Daily and monthly passes are non-transferable.
Lost, stolen or misplaced passes are not replaced or refunded.
Only two regular Maui Bus routes are identified by the County and State airport pages as serving Kahului Airport: Route 35 Haʻikū Islander and Route 40 Upcountry Islander.
The State of Hawaiʻi says the buses stop at marked locations fronting the airport terminal. Both routes operate on approximately 90-minute patterns, so airport travelers should not treat Maui Bus like a high-frequency airport shuttle.

A 60–90 minute route gap can make a tight flight connection risky.
No direct Route 10 or Route 29 boarding at the airport: the official airport information identifies Routes 35 and 40 as the airport-serving fixed routes. Reaching Kīhei, Wailea or West Maui generally requires another connection.
Airport luggage limit: one standard carry-on-sized suitcase, duffel or backpack no larger than 22 × 14 × 9 inches must fit under your seat or on your lap.
The County published exact recurring times for several newly added stops. These are useful when your older printed timetable does not show the stop yet.

Track Maui Bus Live and Check Arrival Predictions
MauiBus.org provides the current route selector and live vehicle map. The County also describes the service as its real-time tracking system for seeing bus locations and estimated arrivals.
1. Choose your route
Select the exact route number: 01, 02, 05, 06, 08, 10, 15, 23, 29, 35, 39 or 40.
2. Confirm your stop
Nearby stops can be close together but serve opposite directions.
3. Check vehicle position
A moving vehicle icon is different from a schedule-only departure.
4. Read announcements
Check for relocated stops, road closures, weather disruption or special-event detours.
5. Arrive early
County rules ask riders to be at the stop at least five minutes before the scheduled departure.
6. Confirm the bus sign
Read the route number and destination before boarding.
A missing live vehicle does not automatically mean the route is canceled. GPS reporting, vehicle assignment, detours or a trip that has not started can temporarily remove a bus from the live display.

Separate commuter network • Effective April 2026
Maui Bus Commuter Routes
The commuter system is separate from the 12-route fixed network. The County publishes four commuter routes, operated daily including holidays.
Makawao–Kapalua
Morning trip begins at Eddie Tam Gym and travels through Pukalani, War Memorial, Waikapū and West Maui. Afternoon service returns from Kapalua.
Haʻikū–Wailea
Morning service begins near Pauwela Road/Hāna Highway, then serves Pāʻia, War Memorial, Kuihelani Park & Ride, Kīhei and Wailea.
Wailuku–Kapalua
Multiple morning trips depart War Memorial Stadium for West Maui, with afternoon departures back from Kapalua.
Kīhei–Kapalua
Morning service runs from South Kīhei through Māʻalaea to Kaʻanapali/Kapalua, with an afternoon return.
Commuter buses work differently: the official commuter document says service is first-come, first-served and published pickup times are approximate because the number of riders and stops can change running time.

Commuter transfers
The County commuter-program page states that transfers to other Maui Bus commuter routes are not charged.
Commuter baggage rule is stricter: the April 2026 commuter document says luggage is not allowed; only bags that fit on your lap or under your seat are allowed.
Official Maui Bus Commuter Schedule — Effective April 2026
The current fixed-route schedule states that all Maui Bus vehicles are ADA accessible. Riders who cannot use the regular fixed-route system because of a qualifying disability may apply for Maui Bus ADA paratransit.
Service area
ADA paratransit operates within corridors extending three-quarters of a mile on each side of a fixed Maui Bus route.
Type of service
Advance-reservation, curb-to-curb transportation for eligible riders who cannot use regular fixed-route service.
General one-way fare
$2.00 for ADA paratransit.
Ticket book
$20 for a 12-ride one-way ticket book under the current published program period.
Personal care attendant
No charge for an eligible rider’s PCA.
Service animal
No additional charge.
Using regular fixed routes: a valid ADA paratransit card also qualifies the rider for fare-free fixed-route Maui Bus service.
All buses are equipped with exterior bicycle racks. Depending on the vehicle, the published capacity is two or three bicycles.
Remove loose items.
Take off bottles, pumps or anything that could fall from the bicycle while the bus is moving.
Tell the driver.
Inform the driver before loading and approach the rack from the curb or front of the bus—not from moving traffic.
Lower the rack.
Release the handle and fold the rack down.
Place both wheels correctly.
Both tires must sit flat in the rack’s wheel positions.
Raise the support arm.
Secure it over the front tire beyond the tire’s highest point.
Tell the driver before unloading.
Exit through the front, unload from the curb/front of the bus and fold the rack up if it is empty.
E-bikes: electric bicycles with a sealed battery compartment can be accepted when they conform to the rack specifications and safety rules. Gas-powered bicycles are not allowed.
Kahului → Kīhei / Wailea
Start with Route 10 Kīhei Islander. Check the exact South Maui destination because Route 15 serves a different local pattern.
Kahului → West Maui
Route 29 West Maui Express is the primary fixed-route cross-island option toward Lahaina/Kaʻanapali and the Nāpili/Kapalua corridor.
Within Lahaina / Kaʻanapali
Route 23 Lahaina Villager is the local West Maui route rather than the Central Maui express.
OGG Airport → Haʻikū
Route 35 is the airport-serving route toward the Haʻikū/North Shore corridor.
OGG Airport → Upcountry
Route 40 is the airport-serving route toward Pukalani/Makawao/Upcountry.
Kahului → Kula
Route 39 serves Kula, but its roughly three-hour spacing means the return trip should be planned before you leave.
Kahului → Waiheʻe
Route 8 Waiheʻe Villager also has wide gaps. Save the return departure before beginning the trip.
Short Wailuku trip
Compare Routes 1 and 2. The clockwise/reverse loops can make one direction substantially faster.
Short Kahului trip
Compare Routes 5 and 6 for the same reason: they circle the local service area in opposite directions.
Travel-time warning: this page does not invent door-to-door times. Connections depend on the exact stop, direction, traffic and whether the arriving bus lines up with the next departure.
Does Maui Bus Run on Sundays and Holidays?
The current fixed-route schedule says the 12 fixed routes operate seven days a week, including holidays. The April 2026 commuter schedule also states that commuter service operates seven days a week, including holidays.
That does not mean every disruption disappears on a holiday. Parades, wildfires, flooding, road work, emergency closures and special events can still alter individual stops or routes.
West Maui deserves an extra alert check. Road and recovery-related changes can affect travel even when the published route itself is operating.

Safety concern
Use the official Maui Bus safety contact listed by the County when reporting a concern involving a route, vehicle or stop.
When calling about a trip: have the route number, direction, boarding stop, date, approximate time and bus number if visible. That is far more actionable than reporting only that “the Maui Bus was late.”
Common Maui Bus Problems and What to Do
The bus is not on the live map
Check the schedule first, then alerts. The bus may not have begun the trip, GPS may be unavailable or the vehicle may have changed assignment.
The PDF and app show different information
Prefer the current official service update and live system when an older PDF conflicts with a newly added stop or detour.
I am at the right intersection but cannot find the bus
Confirm the correct side of the road and look for the official Maui Bus stop sign.
I missed Route 8 or 39
Those routes can have roughly three-hour gaps. Check a safe alternative before simply waiting.
My surfboard cannot board
Surfboards and sandboards are prohibited under the published rules. Arrange another form of transportation.
My luggage is too large
Airport service uses the regular fixed-route baggage limits. Oversized luggage may be refused.
The bicycle rack is full
Rack space is limited to two or three bicycles depending on the vehicle. The bus cannot guarantee bicycle capacity.
I need door-to-door accessible service
Review ADA paratransit eligibility rather than assuming the fixed bus can deviate from its route.
