Green Mountain Transit’s current schedule directory lists Burlington-area local routes, two Sunday circulators, the Franklin County Commuter and the Montpelier LINK Express.

Check the June 2026 schedule GMT’s current Bus Map & Guide took effect Monday, June 29, 2026. Several routes received new times or routing.
Choose the exact route number Route numbers such as 1, 2, 5, 86 and 96 have very different service patterns. Do not use “GMT schedule” alone for a departure.
Check the service day Some routes operate daily, some are weekday commuter services, and Routes 756 and 778 are specifically important for Sunday travel.

What Changed in the Current GMT Bus Map & Guide?

The June 2026 update is not merely a redesigned map. It changes frequencies, several timepoints, Route 5 routing and the Montpelier LINK schedule.

Routes 2, 6 and 7 On weekdays during the summer schedule, these routes operate every 30 minutes from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
School-related trips Neighborhood Specials plus additional trips on Routes 7 and 9 are suspended during summer and are intended to return when school resumes.
Reliability adjustments GMT changed scheduled times on Routes 1, 4, 9, 11 and 96 to better reflect travel conditions.
Route 5 Pine Street Service extends along Champlain Parkway to Lakeside Avenue with two new stops, including a new timepoint at Champlain Parkway and Lakeside.
Route 5 stop-side change Buses no longer travel both directions on Pine Street between Lakeside and Flynn. Downtown-bound riders need the opposite side from former boarding locations.
Route 86 LINK Express GMT introduced a new Burlington–Montpelier schedule ahead of the July 1 Washington County operator transition.
Search-engine trap: a timetable with a March 2026 date can still appear above the June schedule. Always compare the effective date before using a departure time.

GMT schedules are timepoint-based. A route can be frequent during the daytime and much less frequent early in the morning, evenings, weekends or on a Sunday circulator.

Where Do GMT Buses Board at the Downtown Transit Center?

The Downtown Transit Center at 100 Cherry Street is the main Burlington transfer hub. Route schedules identify lettered or numbered boarding spots; verify the posted sign before boarding because operational assignments can change.

These routes are fundamentally different from a local Burlington bus. They use fewer departures, park-and-ride locations and timetable symbols that matter when planning work or medical trips.

Individual trips may serve Williston Park & Ride, Richmond Park & Ride, Waterbury, Department of Labor, National Life and UVM Medical Center differently.

Burlington → Saint Albans DTC departures: 5:10 a.m., 6:10 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

The route serves stops such as Winooski Falls, Milton Town Office Park & Ride, Georgia Park & Ride and Saint Albans Park & Ride. Some trips also serve UVM Medical Center and Northwestern Medical Center.

Stops marked R are request stops; do not expect every trip to stop automatically.

Sunday GMT Service Uses Different Route Numbers in Key Burlington Corridors

One of the easiest GMT mistakes is searching for a weekday route number on Sunday. In the South End and North End, Sunday circulators take over important coverage.

South End: Route 756

The South End Circulator runs on Sunday and covers destinations associated with the Route 5 Pine Street and Route 6 Shelburne Road corridors.

Published Downtown Transit Center departures include morning through early-evening trips spaced about 90 minutes apart.

The North End Circulator provides Sunday service to destinations including Ethan Allen Shopping Center and Northgate-area stops.

It functions as the important Sunday alternative for parts of the Route 7 North Avenue and Route 8 City Loop service area.

Planning shortcut: if your normal weekday trip uses Route 5, 6, 7 or 8, check the Sunday circulators before concluding that there is no Sunday service to your destination.

GMT Bus Fares, Discount Fares and Fare Capping

GMT charges fares on local, commuter and LINK Express routes. Shopping Specials remain fare-free. How you pay matters because fare capping does not currently apply to every payment method.

How to Read a GMT Timetable Without Choosing the Wrong Trip

The timetable headings, symbols and dashes matter. Commuter schedules in particular should not be read as though every bus stops everywhere.

Request stop The bus serves the location on request under the conditions stated in that route timetable.

Connection note Read the route-specific footnote. It can identify a rail or connecting-bus opportunity.

Pick the direction first. Burlington-to-Montpelier and Montpelier-to-Burlington use separate tables. Reading across the wrong table can produce a plausible but useless time.
Find your nearest published timepoint. Not every bus stop appears as a column or row in a printed timetable.
Read the symbol beside the stop. A park-and-ride, request stop or transfer point changes how you use that location.
Follow one run across the table. Do not combine a departure from Run 2 with an arrival from Run 3.
Look beneath the timetable for footnotes. Amtrak connections, Route 100 transfers, boarding-spot notes and request-stop instructions can be more important than the time itself.
Check service alerts immediately before leaving. The printed timetable cannot reflect a same-day detour or canceled trip.

How to Plan a GMT Trip From Address to Bus Stop

Enter the real origin and destination. GMT directs riders to its trip-planning tools for address-based planning rather than making users calculate every transfer manually.
Choose “depart at” or “arrive by.” “Arrive by” is safer for medical appointments, work shifts, classes and rail connections.
Confirm the route number and destination sign. The trip planner can identify a route, but the bus headsign confirms the actual vehicle you should board.
Open the route-specific schedule. Compare the planner result with GMT’s current published timetable, especially on Routes 86 and 96.
Check GMT service alerts. Google-based trip planning may not always reflect a temporary detour or same-day service interruption immediately.
Arrive before the published time. Do not approach the stop at the exact scheduled minute, particularly for low-frequency commuter trips.

GMT Accessibility, Wheelchairs and ADA Paratransit

GMT fixed-route buses are designed to accommodate riders with mobility needs, and GMT describes its buses as equipped with ramps or lifts and capable of kneeling for easier boarding.

Ramp or lift Ask the operator to deploy the ramp or lift when needed. Do not assume you need to climb the steps.
Priority seating Priority seating near the front is reserved for seniors and riders with disabilities.
Service animals Service animals are permitted. Other animals are subject to GMT’s carrier and passenger-conduct rules.
ADA service area ADA paratransit is intended for eligible riders who cannot use fixed-route service and generally covers eligible trips within three-quarters of a mile of the fixed-route network.
Application timeline GMT states that ADA paratransit applications are evaluated within 21 days.

Bike & Ride

Taking a Bicycle on a GMT Bus

GMT states that bike racks are available on all buses at no extra cost on a first-come, first-served basis. The rack has strict size and weight limits.

Before loading Remove loose items such as panniers or bottles, tell the driver you are loading, lower the rack when necessary and secure the front wheel with the support arm.
Driver assistance Passengers load and unload their own bicycles. GMT drivers cannot physically load or unload the bike.
If the rack is full You may need to wait for the next bus. Regular bicycles are not generally allowed inside the bus.
Restricted bikes GMT excludes tandem, recumbent, cargo, three-wheel, fat-tire and other non-traditional bikes from standard racks. Heavy e-bikes may exceed the 55-pound limit.

Beginning July 1, 2026, local public transportation services in Washington County transitioned from Green Mountain Transit to Tri-Valley Transit.

The change is especially important for search results because historical GMT pages can remain indexed even after operational responsibility changes.

Common GMT Schedule Problems and What to Do

The route appears on Google but not GMT’s current route list It may be an older page or a route transferred to another operator. Check the current GMT schedules directory before relying on it.
My old Route 5 stop is on the wrong side The June 29 Pine Street change altered the routing between Lakeside and Flynn. Recheck the current map and downtown-bound stop location.
I cannot find Routes 5–8 on Sunday Check Routes 756 and 778. They provide Sunday circulator coverage for important South End and North End destinations.
The commuter bus skipped my location Verify whether the stop is marked R, whether that specific run serves it, and whether a pickup request is required.
My contactless payment did not cap GMT currently limits fare capping to its Ride Ready app and smart-card system, not open contactless payments.
