Route 49 Bus Schedule: Times, Stops & Map

Looking for the 49 bus schedule? Several major transit agencies operate buses numbered 49. Chicago’s CTA 49 Western, San Francisco’s Muni 49 Van Ness/Mission, Philadelphia’s SEPTA 49 and London’s TfL 49 serve completely different routes.

This guide explains how to identify the correct Route 49, check official weekday and weekend timetables, find major stops, compare ticket prices, read live arrivals and avoid outdated route information. It also explains why Brooklyn’s MTA B49 is a separate route.

Route 49 Bus Schedule Guide

Chicago • Chicago Transit Authority

CTA Route 49 Western Bus Schedule

Chicago’s 49 Western runs between Western/79th on the South Side and Western/Berwyn (5300 N) on the North Side. The route follows one of Chicago’s major north–south streets, serving residential, commercial and transit-transfer corridors.

CTA identifies the 49 as an Owl route, which means overnight service is available. The agency currently lists service throughout the day on weekdays, Saturday and Sunday.

Route name 49 Western.
Terminals Western/79th and Western/Berwyn.
Overnight service Available on Route 49; frequency is not the same as daytime frequency.

If you need help with stop IDs, train connections, CTA fares or the difference between daytime and Owl service, our Chicago CTA bus schedule and Bus Tracker guide explains those details across the city network.

Chicago local tip: At Western Avenue’s rail-station intersections, check which side of Western serves your direction. A stop near a station entrance can be different from the stop for the opposite direction.
CTA 49 service hours

What Time Does the Chicago 49 Bus Start and Stop?

CTA lists all-times service in both directions between Western/79th and Western/Berwyn. Because the route runs overnight, the service cannot be described by a single daily first-bus or last-bus time.

Service day Northbound to Berwyn Southbound to 79th Rider guidance
Monday–Friday All times All times Use the timetable for individual departures and the overnight interval.
Saturday All times All times Saturday frequency may differ from weekday peak service.
Sunday All times All times Use the Sunday table and confirm any special holiday service.
Overnight Owl service available Owl service available Allow for longer waits and check the exact stop.
Major holidays Sunday schedule may apply Sunday schedule may apply CTA lists Sunday schedules for several major holidays.

For the exact departure at an intermediate stop, use the official schedule brochure or Bus Tracker. CTA explicitly states that terminal service spans are different from arrival times farther along the route.

Do Not Confuse 49, 49B and X49

49 Western Regular Western Avenue service between Western/79th and Western/Berwyn, with Owl service.
49B North Western A separate CTA route serving the Western/Howard and Western Brown Line station corridor.
X49 Western Express A separately numbered Western Avenue service. Its stop pattern, schedule and operating periods are not identical to local 49 service.
August 2026 schedule update: CTA announced updated schedules for Route 49 and related Western Avenue services beginning August 23, 2026. Use the current official page rather than an old PDF saved before that change.
Chicago stops and transfers

CTA 49 Western Route Map and Major Connections

The 49 travels along Western Avenue, making it useful for north–south journeys without traveling through Downtown Chicago. It intersects several important east–west streets and CTA rail corridors.

Illustrative Northbound Route 49 Corridor

Simplified north–south geographic guide, not a complete stop list or a scale-accurate route map. Check the current CTA map for the precise street and platform location of each connection.

Southwest Side transfers Near Western Avenue’s major east–west corridors, riders can transfer to other CTA buses or reach the Orange Line, depending on their actual stop.
North Side transfers The route reaches the Western Brown Line station area. The separate 49B service continues farther north, so verify the bus’s destination sign.
Chicago boarding tip: The 49 and 49B should not be treated as one continuous trip without checking the actual terminal and transfer requirements. The route number on the front of the bus matters.
San Francisco • SFMTA

Muni Route 49 Van Ness/Mission Bus Schedule

San Francisco’s 49 Van Ness/Mission connects City College of San Francisco and Fort Mason, operating along Ocean Avenue, Mission Street, South Van Ness Avenue and Van Ness Avenue.

Important destinations along this route include City College, Balboa Park BART, the Mission District, Civic Center, Van Ness transit connections and the Marina/Fort Mason area.

General operating span 5:00 AM to midnight daily, according to SFMTA.
Weekday frequency Approximately every 6 minutes across the listed morning, midday, evening and late-night periods.
Weekend frequency Approximately every 8 minutes during most periods; about every 13 minutes late at night.

For comparison with another major San Francisco route, our Muni Route 44 O’Shaughnessy schedule and map guide covers a different cross-city corridor. Route 44 and Route 49 serve different neighborhoods and should not be confused.

Local rider tip: If you are transferring at Balboa Park BART or traveling to City College, verify whether your stop is on Ocean Avenue or within the station/terminal area. The nearest station entrance is not always the correct Route 49 boarding point.

Selected official timetable rows for outbound service toward City College. Times are scheduled, not live predictions. Use the applicable Saturday/Sunday tab or current SFMTA updates for other service days.

What These Travel Times Mean

The first example takes 42 scheduled minutes from North Point to City College. Later selected trips take longer as the timetable allows for traffic and passenger activity. Your actual ride may be shorter if you board at Market Street, 16th Street or 24th Street.

SFMTA frequency and service days

How Often Does the San Francisco 49 Bus Run?

SFMTA publishes the following frequency guidance for Route 49 Van Ness/Mission. These are scheduled interval figures, not a guaranteed countdown at every stop.

Day Morning Midday Evening Late night
Weekdays About 6 min About 6 min About 6 min About 6 min
Weekends About 8 min About 8 min About 8 min About 13 min

SFMTA lists the regular Route 49 operating span as approximately 5:00 AM–midnight daily. For overnight travel after the normal route ends, SFMTA directs riders to other services, including the 14 and 90 Owl where applicable.

Late-night distinction: The normal 49 is not automatically a 24-hour route. If you need a bus after midnight, check SFMTA’s actual overnight route and stop rather than assuming the daytime 49 continues.
Philadelphia • SEPTA

SEPTA Route 49 Bus Schedule: Important 2026 Route Change

SEPTA Route 49 underwent a major network change beginning August 23, 2026. The current service is identified as 33rd–Dauphin to 40th–Baltimore, connecting North Philadelphia and the University City area.

Older Route 49 timetable PDFs may show 29th–Snyder, Grays Ferry and South Philadelphia. That is the previous alignment and should not be used as the current route.

Critical route correction: SEPTA’s August 2026 New Bus Network removed Route 49 service from South Philadelphia. Riders traveling between University City and the former Grays Ferry corridor should check the extended Route 79 and other current alternatives.
Current northern end 33rd Street / Dauphin Street area.
Current southern/western destination 40th Street / Baltimore Avenue, as identified by SEPTA’s current route listing.
Published frequency change Approximately every 30 minutes during much of the weekday midday and scheduled weekend periods.

For detailed help with SEPTA Key, contactless fares, transfers, route alerts and other Philadelphia buses, see our SEPTA bus schedules, fare and route-change guide.

Old route vs current route

SEPTA 49 Before and After August 23, 2026

Feature Old Route 49 Current Route 49
Southern destination 29th Street / Snyder Avenue 40th Street / Baltimore Avenue
South Philadelphia Served the old corridor No longer served by Route 49
North Philadelphia alignment Used portions of 29th Street Shifted toward 33rd Street
Center City alignment Used portions of 20th Street Realigned toward 22nd Street
Weekday midday frequency About every 18–22 minutes in the former plan About every 30 minutes in the new plan
Weekend frequency About every 22 minutes during specified periods About every 30 minutes during specified daytime/evening periods

Based on SEPTA’s published New Bus Network Phase 1 changes. Real-time operating conditions and later changes should be checked on the current Route 49 page.

Why the Old PDF Can Be Misleading

The older SEPTA PDF at schedules.septa.org/current/49.pdf has displayed the former 33rd–Dauphin to 29th–Snyder schedule. Because its route and endpoints may no longer represent the current service, do not rely on that document without confirming its effective date and alignment.

University City tip: SEPTA’s Route 49 is affected by work associated with the Market Street Bridge corridor. Some construction detours and stop relocations may remain active even though the August network change itself has already taken effect.
London • Transport for London

London Bus 49 Schedule: White City to Clapham Junction

Transport for London’s Route 49 operates between White City Bus Station and Clapham Junction. It connects important West and Southwest London destinations, including Shepherd’s Bush, Kensington, South Kensington and Battersea/Clapham Junction.

Its frequent urban service provides an alternative to rail journeys for some local trips, but the route’s scheduled running time can vary substantially with road traffic.

London first and last service

London Route 49 First Bus, Last Bus and Weekend Times

TfL publishes stop-specific timetables. The following first and last listed Route 49 times are associated with the Onslow Square stop toward White City, rather than a universal terminal service time.

Day First listed buses Last listed buses Direction
Monday–Thursday 5:10, 5:26, 5:42 AM 12:31, 12:43, 12:55 AM next day Toward White City
Friday 5:10, 5:26, 5:42 AM 12:31, 12:43, 12:55 AM next day Toward White City
Saturday 5:07, 5:27, 5:47 AM 12:31, 12:43, 12:55 AM next day Toward White City
Sunday 5:07, 5:27, 5:47 AM 12:31, 12:43, 12:55 AM next day Toward White City

Stop-level example from TfL’s published Onslow Square service information. Check the live stop page for revisions, holiday arrangements and the opposite direction. Times just after midnight belong to the following calendar day.

How Often Does the London 49 Arrive?

TfL live-arrival examples show buses spaced about 10–15 minutes apart at some stops, with shorter or longer gaps possible. Because frequency varies by day, time and traffic, use the exact stop’s current arrivals instead of treating a typical interval as a guaranteed frequency.

Kensington travel tip: South Kensington has several nearby bus stops. A route stopping near the Underground station may use a different stop letter depending on whether it is heading to White City or Clapham Junction.
New York City • MTA B49

NYC B49 Bus Schedule: Manhattan Beach to Bedford-Stuyvesant

Brooklyn’s B49 is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Its official route name is Manhattan Beach–Bedford-Stuyvesant, serving a corridor via Ocean Avenue, Bedford Avenue and Rogers Avenue.

The letter B is part of the route identifier and should not be omitted. The Brooklyn B49 is not Chicago’s 49 Western or another city’s Route 49.

Choose the correct operating agency’s tool.

2
Search route

Enter 49 or B49 as appropriate.

3
Pick direction

Match the bus destination, not just the number.

4

Troubleshooting live bus times

What if Route 49 Does Not Appear in the Tracker?

Check the direction A stop may have a different route direction or stop number from the one used for your search.
Check service alerts Road construction and temporary stop moves may affect tracking, boarding locations or arrival order.
Check the timetable A missing tracked vehicle does not necessarily mean the scheduled service has been canceled.
Stop ID tip: Even when two stops have nearly identical names, their numeric stop IDs can differ by direction. The official SFMTA 49 stop list is a good example of this.
Service changes and detours

Route 49 Alerts: What to Check Before Leaving

Chicago CTA Check for Western Avenue construction, temporary reroutes and updated schedules. CTA Route 49, 49B and X49 can have different advisories.
San Francisco Muni SFMTA provides temporary stop-relocation information, including recently updated stop statuses for Van Ness/Mission service.
Philadelphia SEPTA Construction affecting the Market Street Bridge area can require Route 49 detours or stop relocations. Read the specific current advisory.
London TfL Traffic, special events and road works in Kensington, Shepherd’s Bush and Clapham can affect the 49 corridor.
Brooklyn MTA Check the B49’s current stop and bus position. School events, road work and local diversions can affect Ocean Avenue or Bedford Avenue service.
Same-day service notice: No static article can guarantee a normal trip. Always check the current agency notices shortly before boarding, especially when construction may change the stop.
Accessible bus travel

Route 49 Accessibility, Reduced Fares and Stop Conditions

Accessibility depends on both the bus and the physical boarding stop. A route may operate accessible buses while a particular sidewalk, curb, platform or temporary replacement stop creates a separate obstacle.

CTA Chicago CTA states that all its buses are accessible. Check the route stop, curb conditions and any temporary stop relocation.
SFMTA Muni Check low-floor boarding, priority seating, mobility-device securement and the exact stop location.
SEPTA Philadelphia Verify current boarding locations and accessible transfer paths during construction or route realignment.
TfL London London buses have accessible-boarding provisions. Check whether your specific stop is temporarily closed or moved.
MTA Brooklyn Use the MTA’s accessible bus information and confirm that your chosen B49 stop remains available.
Before you leave
