Do You Need 53 Pulaski or 53A South Pulaski?

CTA has two related but different routes. Route 53 serves the longer Pulaski corridor including Ford City, while Route 53A serves the South Pulaski area from the Orange Line toward destinations around 81st, 111th and selected 115th Street trips.

53 Northbound

Follow the northbound route toward Peterson/Pulaski. Some trips begin from Ford City and others may start partway along the route. Verify the destination sign.

Route 53 First Bus and Last Bus: Weekdays

CTA publishes terminal departure spans for its Route 53 Pulaski service. These times refer to departures from the originating terminal, not to every stop along the corridor.

Northbound: Ford City Mall → Peterson/Pulaski 4:00 AM First published weekday terminal departure.

Last published weekday terminal departure: 12:15 AM the following calendar day.

Southbound: Peterson/Pulaski → Ford City Mall 3:55 AM First published weekday terminal departure.

Last published weekday terminal departure: 11:05 PM.

Do not confuse service span with ride duration. A 4:00 AM Ford City departure does not reach Irving Park or Peterson at 4:00 AM. Use the timepoints in the official PDF and CTA Bus Tracker for your boarding stop.

Example Weekday Northbound Trips

Selected trips below are copied from CTA’s Route 53 PDF effective August 23, 2026. Each row is one scheduled trip, following major published timepoints.

Ford City Mall Pulaski Orange Line Pulaski / Roosevelt Pulaski / Erie Pulaski / Irving Park Pulaski / Peterson
4:01 AM 4:16 AM 4:36 AM 4:46 AM 5:07 AM 5:17 AM
4:25 AM 4:40 AM 5:00 AM 5:10 AM 5:31 AM 5:41 AM
4:43 AM 4:59 AM 5:19 AM 5:29 AM 5:50 AM 6:00 AM

Notice that the first displayed northbound full-route trip departs Ford City at 4:01 AM in the PDF, while the route overview gives approximately 4:00 AM as the first weekday terminal service. The overview provides a service span; the PDF provides individual scheduled trips.

Saturday and Sunday service

Route 53 Weekend Bus Schedule

Route 53 operates on both Saturdays and Sundays. The service spans are similar to weekday service, but specific departure intervals and short turns may differ.

Service day Ford City → Peterson Peterson → Ford City Important note
Monday–Friday 4:00 AM–12:15 AM 3:55 AM–11:05 PM School-day extras and short trips may appear.
Saturday 4:00 AM–midnight 3:55 AM–11:00 PM Use Saturday-specific timetable.
Sunday / holiday 4:00 AM–midnight 3:55 AM–10:55 PM Sunday schedules apply on designated holidays.

How Frequent Is Route 53?

CTA classifies Route 53 as a frequent route, generally 10 minutes or better during major daytime periods. Frequency varies by direction, stop, short-turn pattern and hour. The current weekday PDF also displays sections of 4–10-minute or 6–10-minute scheduled intervals.

Frequency chart explanation: These are selected interval ranges appearing in the official timetable, not citywide average waiting times. They describe different portions of the schedule and cannot be used as a guaranteed arrival countdown.
Night Owl bus service

N53 Overnight Service: Irving Park to Pulaski Orange Line

The current CTA Route 53 timetable shows overnight N53 service between Irving Park Blue Line and Pulaski Orange Line. This is especially important for airport workers, overnight shifts and late-night transfers.

North overnight endpoint Irving Park Blue Line area. Verify where the night bus boards.
South overnight endpoint Pulaski Orange Line area, not the full Ford City Mall terminal.
What to check Look for the N footnote in the timetable and match the vehicle destination sign.

Route 53 vs N53 vs 53A

ServicePrimary purposeTypical mistake

How to read Route 53 times

Find Your Exact Route 53 Bus Departure

This workflow prevents the most common timetable mistake: treating a time shown at Ford City, Pulaski Orange Line or Peterson as the departure time for another stop.

Open the official CTA Route 53 page.Choose 53 Pulaski, not 53A South Pulaski, unless your trip specifically requires the latter.
Choose your service day.Weekday, Saturday and Sunday/holiday schedules can have different intervals and departure spans.
Select northbound or southbound.Match the terminal displayed on the front of the bus and check whether the selected trip continues to your destination.
Find your exact boarding stop.Use CTA Bus Tracker and the stop name or stop ID; the schedule PDF only lists selected timepoints.
Read the trip row or column carefully.Watch for N, S, L and other notes showing overnight, school-day or short-turn trips. A dash means the trip does not serve that timepoint.
Check current alerts.Confirm any temporary stop movement, especially the southbound 26th/Pulaski relocation scheduled in fall 2026.
Leave early enough.Arrive around 5–10 minutes ahead of your expected bus. Allow more time for an unfamiliar rail transfer or last late-night trip.

Important service changes

Route 53 Service Alerts and Temporary Stops

26th / Pulaski — southbound CTA’s fall 2026 alert moves the southbound stop from the northeast to the southeast corner, scheduled September 1–November 27, 2026.
August 2026 new schedule CTA published updated bus schedules effective August 23, 2026. Check that your saved PDF is not from an older service period.
School-day trips Some trips have Little Village High School or other school-day notes. Those trips may not run during weekends or school holidays.
Before traveling today: Check CTA’s current status page. The 26th/Pulaski relocation is a scheduled notice, but same-day conditions and other alerts may change.
Accessible boarding and rider information

Wheelchair Access, Bike Racks and Reduced Fares

CTA states that all its buses are accessible and that buses have front bicycle racks. However, the accessibility of the sidewalk and exact boarding location can still be affected by temporary street construction, snow or stop relocation.

Wheelchair and mobility access Use the operator’s accessibility guidance for ramps, priority seating and mobility-device securement.
Bicycle racks CTA buses have front-mounted bike racks. Check CTA’s instructions for loading and unloading a bicycle safely.
Accessible rail transfers Use the CTA station page to check elevator status before transferring to the Orange, Blue, Green or Pink Line.
Practical rider tip: An accessible bus does not automatically mean every nearby curb is easy to use. If the normal stop is moved, confirm the new boarding corner and sidewalk approach before traveling.
