UMBC Bus Schedule: Routes, Times & Stops

UMBC Transit operates seven shuttle routes connecting the University of Maryland, Baltimore County campus with Arbutus, Catonsville, Downtown Baltimore, Paradise, Route 40, BWI MARC Station and Arundel Mills. The correct shuttle depends on your destination, day and departure time.

The published Fall 2026 schedules run through December 17, 2026. Weekday, weekend and interim schedules differ. UMBC requires riders to carry their physical university ID when boarding; a photo on a phone is not accepted as a substitute.

Use the verified route guide below to find actual campus departure examples, official timetable links, major stops, the live shuttle tracker, MARC and airport connections, accessible boarding information and practical student travel tips.

What Time Do UMBC Shuttles Run?

Several UMBC routes start around 7:00 AM on weekdays. Services such as Paradise, Arbutus, Catonsville and Downtown continue into the evening, while the BWI MARC route is mainly a daytime station connection.

Weekend departures are less frequent and vary substantially by route. There is no single first or last bus time covering every UMBC shuttle.

Need Halethorpe MARC? Arbutus Connects campus with Downtown Arbutus, OCA Mocha and Halethorpe Station.
Need Downtown Baltimore? Downtown Serves UMB, Inner Harbor and Baltimore Greyhound-area stops.
Need BWI Airport rail connection? BWI MARC Use the daytime BWI MARC route or Arundel/MARC when its schedule applies.
Official schedule period UMBC lists Fall 2026 service through December 17, with an interim Fall Break schedule on October 12–13, holiday closures, and Winter 2027 schedules for January 4–22. Individual route pages show their current operating details.

Open UMBC’s official Bus Schedules & Maps directory to select your route and departure day.

Seven official shuttle lines

UMBC Transit Routes: Which Bus Should You Take?

The fastest way to choose a route is by destination, not by departure time alone. Several UMBC shuttles use the same campus stops but travel to entirely different places after leaving campus.

1. Arbutus

Best for: Downtown Arbutus, OCA Mocha, Halethorpe MARC Station, Lansdowne shopping and nearby communities.

Local advantage: Useful for riders connecting with MARC’s Penn Line at Halethorpe.

Official Arbutus timetable Updated weekday evening service announced September 8, 2026.

2. Arundel/MARC

Best for: BWI MARC/Amtrak, BWI Airport Rental Car Facility and Arundel Mills Mall.

When especially useful: Evening trips, weekends and applicable interim schedules.

Official Arundel/MARC timetable

3. BWI MARC

Best for: BWI MARC/Amtrak Station and onward connections toward Baltimore or Washington.

Important: This is a station shuttle, not a direct ride to an airport passenger terminal.

Official BWI MARC timetable

4. Catonsville

Best for: Rolling Road, CCBC Catonsville, Frederick Road and the Catonsville commercial area.

Useful stop: Rolling Road/Valley Road near CCBC.

Official Catonsville timetable

5. Downtown

Best for: University of Maryland Baltimore, Inner Harbor, Baltimore Convention Center and Greyhound-area stops.

Practical use: A campus-to-city connection for classes, internships, appointments and downtown trips.

Important BWI MARC schedule handoff UMBC’s BWI MARC page directs riders to use Arundel/MARC after 4:30 PM, on weekends and during interim schedules. The BWI MARC table also displays some later listed weekday runs. For a late-afternoon connection, confirm the currently operating shuttle in the live tracker or call UMBC Transit before depending on a particular departure.
Schedules are estimates UMBC asks riders to plan for traffic, detours and unexpected delays, and to arrive at the stop approximately five minutes early. Some route tables show timed stops and blank cells for untimed intermediate stops.
Stop-by-stop departure examples

Selected UMBC Shuttle Trips: Actual Stop Times

These examples show how a scheduled campus departure continues to a destination. They come from published UMBC route tables, not from an assumed average travel speed.

On the published weekend schedule, the Downtown shuttle’s 8:30 AM campus trip reaches the following timed stops:

UMBC campus 8:30 AM Commons Dr & Park Rd.
UMB area 8:53 AM Pratt St & Greene St.
Inner Harbor 8:56 AM Pratt St & Light St.

This example takes about 26 minutes from the campus departure to the listed Inner Harbor stop. The route may take longer on other runs, particularly during road closures and downtown events.

On-campus boarding locations

Where Do UMBC Buses Pick Up Students?

Many UMBC shuttle routes start from Commons Drive and Park Road. Depending on the route, other campus pickup points include Park Road/Poplar Avenue, Hilltop Circle, the RAC Circle and the Administration Drive bus shelter.

Commons Drive & Park Road

One of the principal published starting stops. All seven current route pages list this stop in their schedule tables.

Park Road & Poplar Avenue

A second major campus pickup location, often shown with the same nominal departure time as Commons Drive.

Hilltop Circle & Commons Drive

Listed for several shuttle routes, including the BWI MARC, Arundel/MARC and Downtown services.

RAC Circle / Lower Administration Drive

Useful for the routes that serve the Recreation and Athletic Center area. On some timetable examples, the RAC pickup occurs about one minute after the starting stop.

Administration Drive Bus Shelter

Appears in various Downtown, Catonsville, Paradise and Route 40 stop lists. Check whether it is a pickup or return stop for your selected trip.

Poplar Avenue & Stadium Lot

Important on routes such as Arbutus and some Paradise patterns. UMBC’s Transit Office is also associated with the Stadium Lot area.

Important campus stop detail A route may pass more campus stops on its return trip than on its outward trip. Blank cells in an official timetable do not necessarily mean the stop is permanently removed; they may indicate an untimed stop. Confirm the route’s stop sequence before boarding.
Rail and airport connections

UMBC to BWI Airport, MARC and Amtrak: Which Shuttle?

This is a common source of confusion. UMBC has both a BWI MARC route and an Arundel/MARC route. Both can serve the BWI rail station, but they have different operating patterns.

Daytime BWI MARC

Use this for campus-to-BWI MARC/Amtrak service during its published weekday operating period.

Example: UMBC 7:00 AM → BWI MARC/Amtrak 7:15 AM.

Check its official timetable for later trips and the return journey.

Evening / Weekend Arundel/MARC

Use this route for BWI MARC, the rental car facility and Arundel Mills when the BWI MARC schedule directs you to it.

Example: UMBC 6:00 PM → BWI MARC 6:15 PM → Arundel Mills 6:30 PM.

How to Get From UMBC to a BWI Airport Terminal

  1. Open the current BWI MARC or Arundel/MARC timetable.
  2. Choose a UMBC shuttle that stops at BWI MARC/Amtrak Station.
  3. Check your intended departure against the current train and airport-shuttle connections.
  4. Board the university shuttle with your physical UMBC ID.
  5. Exit at BWI MARC/Amtrak Station.
  6. Follow station signs for the airport’s shuttle-bus connection.
  7. Board the correct BWI Airport terminal shuttle.
  8. Allow additional time for terminal arrival, airline check-in, security and traffic.
Do not assume the UMBC shuttle drops passengers at airline check-in. The university route serves the BWI rail station; the airport-terminal shuttle is a separate service. Confirm terminal access and airport shuttle frequency before planning a flight.

UMBC also notes connections with Maryland MTA commuter service at BWI MARC. For wider Baltimore-area transit routes, including Maryland MTA CityLink services, our Baltimore CityLink bus routes and schedule guide explains how to identify the right color-coded route, check official times and verify fare rules when using public transportation beyond the university shuttle.

Downtown Baltimore destinations

UMBC Downtown Shuttle: UMB, Inner Harbor and Greyhound Stops

The Downtown route helps UMBC riders reach central Baltimore without driving. It includes stops around the UMB campus, the Inner Harbor, Baltimore Convention Center and Greyhound Station.

UMB Campus

Pratt Street/Greene Street is a key published timepoint for the University of Maryland, Baltimore area.

Inner Harbor

Pratt Street/Light Street appears in the Downtown timetable.

Greyhound

Warner Street at the Greyhound Station is another published stop.

Weekend Downtown Departure Examples

UMBC’s Fall 2026 weekend timetable lists campus departures at 8:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM, 7:00 PM and 10:30 PM.

At the weekend 11:00 AM campus departure, the published timetable shows:

Location Scheduled time
UMBC Commons Dr & Park Rd 11:00 AM
RAC Circle 11:01 AM
Greyhound Station area 11:15 AM
Pratt St & Greene St (UMB) 11:23 AM
Pratt St & Light St (Inner Harbor) 11:26 AM

The University shuttle is not a substitute for every Baltimore bus route. If you need destinations beyond the Downtown shuttle’s stop list, you may have to transfer to Maryland MTA services and pay a separate fare.

For example, Maryland MTA Route 94 serves a Fort McHenry–Sinai Hospital corridor. Our Route 94 guide for Baltimore’s Fort McHenry–Sinai Hospital service explains how to identify that Maryland MTA route and use its official trip planner. Confirm whether an actual transfer is practical for your destination and departure time.

Late Downtown trip tip The last listed departure from UMBC is not necessarily the last usable trip back from Downtown Baltimore. Check the complete return-trip column before going downtown in the evening.
Nearby community destinations

Arbutus vs Catonsville vs Route 40: Which UMBC Shuttle Is Better?

These three routes overlap in the broader southwest Baltimore County area, but they do not have interchangeable stops.

Arbutus

Choose it for: OCA Mocha, Downtown Arbutus, Halethorpe MARC and related stops.

Useful for train connections and shopping close to the Halethorpe/Arbutus corridor.

Catonsville

Choose it for: CCBC Catonsville, Rolling Road, Frederick Road and the surrounding Catonsville community.

The timetable includes an early weekday 7:00 AM campus departure and a 7:05 AM CCBC-area timepoint.

Route 40

Choose it for: Route 40 commercial destinations, shopping centers and certain CCBC/Frederick Road stops.

Published weekday campus departures include 7:00 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM and later evening service.

Arbutus Weekend Timetable: Halethorpe MARC Example

UMBC departure OCA Mocha / East Dr & Maple Ave Halethorpe MARC arrival
9:30 AM 9:34 AM 9:39 AM
11:00 AM 11:04 AM 11:09 AM
3:30 PM 3:34 PM 3:39 PM
9:30 PM 9:34 PM 9:39 PM

These examples come from the published Arbutus weekend schedule. Compare the train departure time carefully: arriving at Halethorpe nine minutes after leaving campus does not guarantee a train connection with only a few minutes to spare.

Route 40 vs Maryland MTA LocalLink 56

UMBC Route 40 is a university-operated campus shuttle. Maryland MTA LocalLink 56 is a separate public bus route connecting Downtown Baltimore and White Marsh. They are not the same service and do not share a universal fare or timetable.

If you are planning onward travel toward White Marsh after reaching Downtown Baltimore, our Maryland MTA LocalLink 56 Downtown–White Marsh schedule guide explains the public-bus route, payment methods and stop lookup. Use the Maryland MTA trip planner to confirm the actual connection.

Residential-neighborhood service

UMBC Paradise Shuttle: Weekday and Weekend Times

The Paradise route serves parts of Arbutus, Paradise, Yale Heights and Beechfield. It also uses multiple campus stops and the Technology Research Center area.

Weekday Campus Departures

The published Fall 2026 weekday schedule shows service from Commons Drive/Park Road every 30 minutes through several major periods:

Morning 7:00 AM First listed trip, continuing at 7:30, 8:00, 8:30 and other half-hour marks.
Afternoon 12:00 PM Half-hourly trips shown through the afternoon block.
Evening 10:30 PM Last listed campus departure in the evening weekday block.

Weekend Service

Weekend departures are less evenly spaced. The published campus list includes 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:45 AM, 1:30 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, 5:30 PM, 7:30 PM, 9:30 PM and 10:30 PM.

Paradise detour information UMBC posted a Paradise detour involving Maiden Choice Lane/Frederick Road on October 20, 2026 and later posted that service had been restored. Treat that notice as a dated incident, not a permanent route change. Review current UMBC Transit updates for new disruptions.

Check the full Paradise route stop list and timetable.

Required boarding rules

Is UMBC Transit Free? Do You Need a Student ID?

UMBC Transit is a university-operated shuttle service for eligible campus riders rather than an ordinary public bus where anyone can purchase a single cash ticket.

UMBC explicitly requires a physical UMBC ID at boarding. The university states that cellphone photos or pictures of IDs are not acceptable substitutes. Its accessibility office also identifies active campus-card eligibility for using the shuttles.

Physical UMBC ID Required Present your valid physical campus identification to the operator.
Public ticket fare Not listed The university does not publish a conventional single-ride cash fare for eligible campus shuttle riders.
Maryland MTA Separate Public MTA buses, MARC and other regional services have independent fares and eligibility rules.

Can You Bring Guests?

UMBC’s published guest-ridership policy permits guests subject to conditions:

  • Tell the operator about your guests when boarding.
  • Up to three guests per sponsoring rider are permitted on a trip.
  • The sponsoring rider remains responsible for the guests.
  • Guest usage is limited to three one-way trips per calendar week, across no more than two days in that week.
  • Guest access does not remove the physical-ID requirement for the sponsoring rider.
Do not assume any visitor can board alone. Guest eligibility, maximum usage and identification rules matter. Check current UMBC policy or contact Transit before bringing someone who is not an eligible campus rider.

What Is Not Allowed on UMBC Transit?

The university’s rider policy prohibits smoking, eating, drinking, alcohol use, littering and behavior that distracts the operator. Riders must remain behind the driver’s position and follow safe seating or standing instructions.

Read the official UMBC Transit ridership and guest rules.

Live vehicle tracking

How to Track a UMBC Shuttle in Real Time

UMBC’s Transit website provides a shuttle tracker and links to the Transit app. Live vehicle information helps distinguish a bus moving toward your stop from a printed schedule that might be affected by traffic or a detour.

1 Open the tracker Start from UMBC’s official Transit Tracker.
2 Select the route Choose Arbutus, Downtown, BWI MARC or another named shuttle.
3 Find your stop Match Commons Drive or the correct neighborhood intersection.
4 Review the vehicle Check the position or arrival estimate if available.
5 Recheck alerts Confirm the schedule remains in effect for the selected day.

Open UMBC’s official Transit Tracker.

What if the Shuttle Is Missing From the Map?

A missing live vehicle may mean it is between scheduled trips, not reporting its location, delayed, diverted or not operating under the selected schedule. Check the route table and official UMBC updates rather than treating an empty map as proof of cancellation.

Scheduled vs predicted time The posted timetable is planned service. A live arrival is a newer estimate, and neither guarantees an exact arrival. UMBC advises riders to be at the stop about five minutes early.

For an unfamiliar off-campus destination, our Google Maps bus route and walking-directions guide explains how to compare stop locations, walking sections and transit connections. Confirm university-only shuttle eligibility and service separately on UMBC’s official website.

Accessible shuttle travel

Are UMBC Shuttle Buses Wheelchair Accessible?

Yes. UMBC’s Office of Accessibility and Disability Services states that all UMBC Transit vehicles are wheelchair accessible and, when operating, are available to campus members with an active campus card.

Accessible vehicle

UMBC identifies its Transit vehicles as wheelchair accessible. Tell the operator if you need boarding assistance.

Boarding location

Check that your chosen stop has a usable curb, sidewalk or boarding path, particularly during snow or construction.

Accessible transfer

For MARC, Amtrak or public-bus transfers, confirm accessibility separately with the connecting service provider.

Accessible Trip Planning Steps

  1. Open the UMBC route schedule and select the shuttle you need.
  2. Identify your campus pickup point and off-campus destination.
  3. Check the route’s live vehicle information and service notices.
  4. Confirm the physical boarding area is accessible.
  5. Bring your active physical UMBC ID.
  6. Contact UMBC Transit if you need to confirm boarding or wheelchair accommodation.
  7. Allow extra time for an accessible MARC, Amtrak or public-bus connection.

Academic calendar and shuttle service

UMBC Fall Break, Thanksgiving and Winter Shuttle Schedules

UMBC Transit changes service levels based on the academic calendar. A schedule shown for a regular class day may not apply during Fall Break, Thanksgiving, winter session, summer or an interim period.

Period or date Published transit information What riders should do
Fall 2026 Route schedules through December 17, 2026 Use the Fall 2026 route table.
October 12–13, 2026 Fall Break interim schedule Use the special Fall Break timetable, not the ordinary weekday schedule.
November 27–28, 2026 UMBC lists Transit as closed Do not plan a university shuttle ride without an updated agency notice.
January 4–22, 2027 Winter 2027 schedule period Select the Winter 2027 timetable for your route.
Different schedules on the same day During interim service, a shuttle may depart at entirely different times. Always open the section labeled for the academic period you are actually traveling in.

Weather and Event Closures

Severe weather, athletic events, campus closures and road incidents can affect shuttle service. UMBC posts current transit notices on its website and associated myUMBC channels.

Before an important journey, check UMBC Transit’s latest announcements, then confirm your selected route’s schedule.

Official website walkthrough

How to Find Your Exact UMBC Bus Time

  1. Open UMBC Transit. Visit the official Bus Schedules & Maps page.
  2. Choose the route by destination. For example, choose Arbutus for Halethorpe MARC or Downtown for Inner Harbor.
  3. Check the academic term. Choose Fall 2026, interim or Winter 2027, as appropriate.
  4. Select the service day. Use Weekday, Saturday, Sunday or a special interim section.
  5. Identify your boarding stop. Commons Drive/Park Road is a common starting point, but other campus stops vary by route.
  6. Find the relevant bus run. Follow the same column through your boarding time and destination stop.
  7. Check untimed stops. If a stop has a blank cell, UMBC advises estimating using the closest timed stops before and after it.
  8. Open the Transit Tracker. Check available current vehicle information.
  9. Read current service notices. Look for detours, closures and revised departure times.
  10. Arrive early with your ID. Reach the correct stop around five minutes before the estimated arrival and present your physical UMBC ID.
Useful timetable-reading trick UMBC tables label trips as Bus Run #1, Bus Run #2 and so on. Read vertically down one run’s column to follow the same bus from campus to its timed destination and return stops. Do not combine stops from different runs to estimate one trip.
