The most reliable starting point is the official PRT Schedule Finder. It lists Pittsburgh-area buses by route number and name, along with rail and incline services.

1. Find your route Search the route number, such as 28X, 61A, 71B, P1, G2, or another PRT bus.
2. Check your timetable Review weekday, Saturday, Sunday, and holiday service separately. Confirm the schedule’s effective date.
3. Check the actual arrival Open PRT TrueTime, select your route, direction, and stop, then review the predicted arrival.
Important October 2026 update PRT has announced service adjustments effective Sunday, October 18, 2026. As of October 9, those changes are upcoming, not yet in effect. Check the schedule appropriate for your travel date before relying on a saved PDF or old bus-stop timetable. See the October 18 service changes.

Pittsburgh Bus Routes by Area and Travel Purpose

Downtown Pittsburgh

Downtown is an important transfer area for local and regional PRT buses. Stops are distributed across streets including Liberty Avenue, Grant Street, Fifth Avenue, and nearby corridors.

Confirm the exact boarding street because different routes and directions use different stops.

Schedules & departure times

Pittsburgh Bus Times: First Bus, Last Bus, Weekends & Frequency

There is no single start time or last-bus time for all Pittsburgh buses. Each PRT route has its own weekday, Saturday, Sunday, and sometimes holiday pattern.

Weekday morning Check the first departure from your actual terminal and allow extra time for the trip to reach a later stop.
Peak commute Some routes have additional commuter trips or limited/flyer service. Frequency varies by route.
Evening service Departure intervals can increase and some services may stop running earlier than major corridors.
Saturday / Sunday Weekend schedules can differ from weekdays and from each other. Check the correct service-day table.

Examples of What Riders Should Check

Situation Correct schedule check Practical rider action
First bus in the morning First trip for the chosen direction, day, and boarding stop. Do not mistake a terminal departure for your own stop’s departure.
Last bus at night Final departure from the return-trip stop. Check the return service before leaving home.
Weekend travel Saturday or Sunday timetable. Check if a commuter-only service operates on weekends.
Holiday travel Current PRT holiday schedule and notices. Do not assume a normal Monday-to-Friday timetable.
Travel after a schedule change PDF or route page effective on travel date. Discard old screenshots and timetable downloads.
A delayed bus TrueTime arrival estimate and service alerts. Check whether your stop has temporarily moved.
How early should I reach the bus stop? A practical recommendation is 5–10 minutes before the listed departure. Allow 10–15 minutes for unfamiliar terminals, important connections, accessible boarding arrangements, or infrequent services. This is planning guidance rather than a guaranteed operating rule.

Open the current PRT schedule directory to get exact published first, last, and intermediate departures for your selected route.

How to Read a PRT Bus Timetable

PRT schedules can list several major timepoints instead of every individual bus stop. A timepoint is a reference location along the trip; your exact stop may be between two printed timepoints.

Timepoint 1 Route origin or a major terminal. This is not necessarily your boarding location.
Timepoint 2 An intermediate intersection, station, or transfer point.
Timepoint 3 A later destination or terminal. Trips may end here or continue on a documented branch.

28X Airport Flyer Schedule: Fare, Travel Time & Boarding

The 28X Airport Flyer is one of Pittsburgh’s most useful public bus routes for travelers. PRT describes it as a direct and affordable connection to Pittsburgh International Airport.

One-way fare $2.75 PRT’s listed standard airport bus fare.
Typical frequency 30–40 Minutes between buses, approximately. Check the current timetable.
Operating period 5 AM–12 AM Approximate service span reported by PRT, not an exact stop departure.
Travel time Varies Depends on boarding point, traffic, and the chosen departure.

2Shadyside
3Oakland
4Downtown
5West Busway / West Carson
6Airport

Simplified corridor sequence based on PRT’s published airport service description. Consult the official schedule for individual stops, direction, and trip patterns.

Important 28X direction rule PRT specifies boarding-only stops along sections of the route toward the airport and discharge-only stops along sections of the route toward Downtown. Do not assume the 28X can be used for every short local trip along its corridor.
Where do I board at Pittsburgh Airport? PRT announced that the 28X serves the new terminal’s consolidated bus stop on the lower-level ground transportation area, following the November 2025 terminal opening. Follow current airport ground-transportation signs for the exact bus stop.
How early should I leave for a flight? Check the official bus trip and estimate journey time from your stop. Add travel to the terminal, airline check-in, security time, and a contingency for traffic or missed departures. Do not treat the published bus arrival as a guaranteed flight connection.

2026 bus fare guide

Pittsburgh Bus Fare, Pass Prices & Transfers

PRT publishes fare products covering its bus, light rail, and applicable incline services. These are the fare amounts listed on its official fare information pages.

Standard single fare $2.75 Stored-value or applicable three-hour fare product.
Cash fare $2.75 One ride; cash payment does not provide the standard transfer benefit.
Reduced fare $1.35 For eligible reduced-fare riders.
Day pass $7.00 Valid through the service day under PRT fare rules.
7-day full-fare pass $25 Valid for seven days after activation.
31-day full-fare pass $97.50 Valid for 31 days after activation.
7-day reduced pass $12.50 Available to eligible reduced-fare riders.
31-day reduced pass $48.75 Available to eligible reduced-fare riders.
Three-hour transfer rule PRT states that eligible stored-value, ticket, and mobile fare products include unlimited transfers within a three-hour validity period. Cash fare does not provide transfers.
Traveling twice in one day? Compare paying $2.75 for each separate fare purchase with a $7 day pass. For three independent full-fare payments, the total would be $8.25, which exceeds the cost of the day pass. However, trips inside an existing three-hour transfer window may not need another fare.
Senior fares PRT lists free rides for eligible riders age 65 or older who present an accepted Pennsylvania Senior Citizen ID Card or Senior ConnectCard. Other reduced-fare programs have their own eligibility and verification requirements.

Fare payment tutorial

How to Pay for a Pittsburgh Bus Ride

PRT is moving from its older ConnectCard system toward ReadyFare. The transition is important because not every card, cash, mobile, or contactless payment type has identical rules.

1
Choose fare

Decide whether you need a single ride, day pass, or longer-duration pass.

2
Select payment

Check whether your fare is supported by ReadyFare, existing ConnectCard, Ready2Ride, or cash.

3
Prepare before boarding

Load your fare or open your valid mobile ticket in advance.

4
Tap or scan

Use the correct reader or present the accepted payment method when boarding.

5
Check transfer validity

Keep track of your fare validity if making another PRT connection.

ReadyFare rollout in 2026 PRT says ConnectCards remain usable during the ReadyFare transition and has not fixed a final ConnectCard acceptance end date on its transition page. Existing cardholders should follow official instructions for requesting a new ReadyFare card and transferring balances.
Can I simply tap any bank card? Do not assume open-loop credit/debit-card payment is available on every bus. PRT’s Ready2Ride FAQ describes direct credit-card tapping as a planned feature. Confirm its actual launch status before depending on it. Buying a mobile ticket with a bank card is different from tapping the bank card directly at the bus validator.

Scheduled Departure vs Live Pittsburgh Bus Arrival

Scheduled departure is the time PRT plans to operate a trip. TrueTime arrival is a prediction based on available real-time vehicle information. The predicted time may move forward or backward as conditions change.

1
Open TrueTime

Visit PRT’s official real-time tracking website.

2
Choose route

Select the correct bus, such as 28X, P1, 61A, or another route.

3
Choose direction

Confirm inbound/outbound and the destination sign.

4
Select stop

Use the exact stop name or stop number when shown.

5
Recheck arrival

Review predicted minutes and check again shortly before leaving.

Open PRT TrueTime

Why a bus might disappear from tracking PRT explains that TrueTime may stop displaying vehicles that are detoured off normal routing, removed from service, or not transmitting location data. TrueTime also does not display stop-arrival predictions more than 30 minutes away. Therefore, no visible prediction does not automatically prove that the bus is canceled.
Major stops and connections

Important Pittsburgh Bus Stops, Stations & Transfer Areas

Area or station Why riders use it What to verify
Downtown Pittsburgh Numerous local routes and connections across the region. Exact street, stop ID, direction, and any Downtown detour.
Penn Station / East Busway Important connection point for busway-related trips. Station stop letter, inbound/outbound direction, and served route.
East Liberty Station Busway stop and East End connection area. Which route serves your destination and correct platform/stop.
Wilkinsburg Station East Busway and nearby community connections. Route-specific stop location and service day.
Oakland / Forbes and Fifth Universities, medical centers, and major travel corridors. Recent routing changes and temporary stop relocations.
North Side / Allegheny area Bus, rail, and regional transfer possibilities. Whether your journey requires a walk between different stops.
Pittsburgh International Airport 28X Airport Flyer service. Current lower-level ground transportation bus stop and departure direction.
Stop IDs matter PRT TrueTime can identify stops by a numerical stop ID. The same street intersection may have separate stops for opposite directions. Use the exact posted stop number rather than choosing a nearby-looking location.

Important service updates

Pittsburgh Bus Changes in 2026: What Riders Need to Know

Transit information can become outdated after a service adjustment. Two particularly important topics for Pittsburgh riders are the October 18 schedule updates and ongoing University Line construction.

October 18, 2026 Schedule Changes

PRT has announced schedule adjustments taking effect on Sunday, October 18, 2026.

Examples from its official notice include timetable modifications for routes 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 14, and 15, along with other adjustments.

For Route 1, PRT specifically announced that a weekday 4:46 PM outbound trip from Penn Station will change to 4:48 PM, and a weekday 6:31 PM inbound trip from Tarentum Park and Ride will change to 6:33 PM.

Oakland University Line Construction

PRT’s University Line project is improving transit infrastructure on the Downtown–Uptown–Oakland corridor.

During construction, some routes were moved from their former outbound Fifth Avenue alignment to Forbes Avenue.

The project includes planned bus priority improvements, upgraded shelters, accessibility features, and passenger information displays.

University Line project updates
Bus Line Refresh is not automatically today’s route map PRT is developing broader proposed network changes. Proposed route numbers, extensions, and connections shown in planning materials should not be treated as operating schedules until PRT confirms implementation and publishes active timetables.

Detours and delays

How to Check Pittsburgh Bus Service Alerts

Construction detours May change streets, turns, stops, and the normal route path.
Temporary stop closure A bus may still run while one or more normal stops are unavailable.
Traffic and events Road closures, games, parades, and other events can change arrival times.
Weather conditions Snow, ice, or severe weather can affect normal routing and travel time.

Before traveling, open PRT Service Alerts and Updates. Choose the applicable route and check the direction, affected stops, and dates.

Service status note This is not a live status board. An absence of alerts in an old article or saved screenshot does not guarantee normal service today.
Accessible transit

Pittsburgh Bus Accessibility, Reduced Fares & Rider Assistance

Accessibility involves both the vehicle and the boarding environment. Riders should consider the stop’s sidewalk, curb, crossing, slope, and temporary construction conditions in addition to the bus itself.

Accessible bus service Check PRT’s published accessible features for buses, vehicle boarding equipment, priority seating, and mobility-device arrangements.
ACCESS Paratransit PRT provides information about ACCESS paratransit and related eligibility or service arrangements. These are different from ordinary fixed-route bus schedules.
Discounted fares PRT offers reduced-fare programs to eligible riders. Required cards, proof, age qualifications, and program rules vary.

PRT Accessibility and Rider Services

Important accessibility tip If a stop is closed or inaccessible, do not assume the next stop is suitable. Contact PRT customer service to confirm an accessible alternative and any route-specific boarding requirements.
Step-by-step rider guide

How to Plan a Pittsburgh Bus Trip From Start to Finish

1
Enter destination

Identify the neighborhood, station, address, hospital, university, or terminal.

2
Select route

Use the PRT trip planner or schedule directory.

3
Confirm stop

Check walking directions, stop ID, and bus headsign.

4
Prepare fare

Load ReadyFare/accepted card, mobile ticket, or correct cash fare.

5
Monitor arrival

Use TrueTime and check whether your bus has a detour.

Example: Oakland to Downtown Search your exact Oakland boarding address and Downtown destination using the PRT trip planner. A suitable direct bus may be available, but the result depends on your location, time, route alignment, and any construction changes. Check the selected trip’s arrival estimate and the Downtown stop where you need to exit.
Connections and transfers

Pittsburgh Bus Transfers: What to Know

Not every Pittsburgh journey uses one bus. Some trips combine two buses or connect to light rail or other PRT services.

Bus → Bus Check the stop location, connection time, and whether your fare remains valid during the transfer window.
Bus → Light Rail Use the trip planner to confirm the appropriate T station and fare validity.
Bus → Airport Confirm where to meet the 28X and allow enough time for its published frequency and airport travel.

Transfer Buffer Guidance

Transfer situation Suggested planning buffer Why
Two frequent routes Allow extra minutes beyond scheduled walking time. Live arrival changes or a missed vehicle can affect the trip.
Infrequent or limited route Consider an earlier connecting departure. A missed connection may cause a substantial wait.
Airport connection Plan conservatively with another possible departure. Traffic and airport requirements create a higher consequence for delay.
Accessible transfer Allow time to reach the accessible boarding point. Stop layout and temporary closures may affect the route.

These are planning recommendations, not published PRT minimum connection times.
