TheBus Oʻahu rider guide • 2026

Find the Right Honolulu Bus Route, Stop and Departure Time

Honolulu’s public bus network is operated as TheBus and serves Honolulu, Waikīkī and communities across Oʻahu. There is no single citywide timetable: each route has its own service days, directions, timepoints, destination signs and effective schedule date.

Use this guide to find current TheBus routes, fares, airport service, Waikīkī connections, North Shore buses, Honolulu Estimated Arrival predictions, holiday schedules, luggage rules, accessible travel information and official route maps.

Quick answer

How Honolulu Bus Schedules Work

TheBus publishes a separate timetable, route description and route map for each bus line. Many current schedules carry effective dates such as March 1, May 31 or August 23, 2026, so riders should check the effective date instead of assuming an older timetable is still valid.

1. Route Find the route number or letter.
2. Direction Match the destination sign.
3. Service day Weekday, Saturday, Sunday or State Holiday.
4. Timepoint Find the closest published stop/timepoint.
5. Live arrival Use HEA before walking to the stop.
Important: a timetable time is not automatically the time for every stop between published timepoints. Use the route timetable plus Honolulu Estimated Arrival (HEA) for your actual stop.

How to Read TheBus Timetable Without Missing Your Bus

Timetable item What it means What the rider should do
Effective date The date from which that schedule applies. Do not use an older PDF if a newer timetable is listed.
Direction Usually eastbound, westbound or destination-based. Match the bus headsign with the timetable direction.
Timepoint letters Selected major stops used to build the printed timetable. Find the timepoint before or nearest your stop, then use HEA.
HEA stop number Stop identifier used by Honolulu Estimated Arrival. Enter the stop number in HEA for live/predicted arrivals.
State Holiday Some routes publish a separate State Holiday schedule. Check the official holiday table before assuming weekday service.
ZOOM A special schedule rule applies after a defined ZOOM timepoint. Read the timetable note carefully because normal “do not leave early” assumptions may differ after that point.
Timing tip: for an unfamiliar stop, arrive several minutes early and check HEA shortly before walking to the stop. Island traffic, construction, events and long route distances can change actual travel time.

TheBus Fare, HOLO Card and Passes

HOLO 2-Hour Pass $3.00 Unlimited rides for 2 hours

Airport rider guide

Honolulu Airport to Waikīkī by Bus

The current Waikīkī visitor guide identifies W Line for travel involving Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. The official route list shows W Line operating Monday through Sunday between the Lelepaua Airport Skyline Station area and Waikīkī Beach & Hotels.

Typical W Line travel chain to verify before boarding
1Airport / Lelepaua area 2Ahua / Lagoon area 3Nimitz corridor 4Downtown area 5Ala Moana 6Waikīkī 7Return direction
Verify boarding location Do not assume every airport curb is served. Use the current W timetable, map and airport-area stop information.
Check luggage rules The current temporary baggage rule permits one standard suitcase plus one smaller carry-on-size bag, subject to safe storage requirements.
Check return service Confirm the correct Waikīkī stop and westbound W destination before your airport return trip.

Waikīkī boarding guide

Useful Waikīkī Bus Stops and Corridors

The current Waikīkī guide, revised August 23, 2026, groups many important routes by the street where riders board.

Kūhiō Avenue Routes include 2, weekday 2L, 8, 13, 42, westbound E and W.
Ala Moana Boulevard Current guide lists Routes 42, E and W.
Kalākaua / Kapiʻolani Park Current guide lists Routes 14 and 200.
Monsarrat Avenue Current guide lists Route 2, 8 and 42.
Kalākaua / McCully Bridge Current guide lists Routes 2, 8, 13 and 4.
Downtown Honolulu Routes from Waikīkī include 2, weekday 2L, 13, 42, E and W according to the current visitor guide.
Local rider tip: Waikīkī has parallel streets and one-way traffic patterns. Confirm the street name, direction and stop number instead of walking to the opposite side of the road based only on the route number.
North Shore connections

Honolulu / Waikīkī to North Shore by TheBus

For North Shore destinations such as Haleʻiwa, Waimea Bay, Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach, the current Waikīkī visitor guide directs riders toward Ala Moana Center and then Route 60, or Route 52 toward Haleʻiwa with a connection to Route 60 where appropriate.

Route 60 Honolulu / Ala Moana ↔ Kāneʻohe ↔ Kualoa ↔ Lāʻie ↔ Turtle Bay ↔ Haleʻiwa.
Route 52 Honolulu / Ala Moana ↔ Wahiawā ↔ Haleʻiwa.
Allow extra time These are long island routes. Travel time can vary significantly with traffic and transfers.
Practical trip planning: check both the outbound and return timetable before leaving Honolulu. Long-distance Oʻahu routes can have less frequent evening service than urban Waikīkī routes.
Real-time bus tool

Use TheBus-HEA for Live Arrival Information

HEA means Honolulu Estimated Arrival. The official service provides real-time bus arrival information through a computer or web-enabled phone and works with the stop numbers printed in many TheBus timetables.

1
Open HEA Use the official Honolulu Estimated Arrival page.
2
Find stop number Look at the stop sign, timetable or route information.
3
Choose route Confirm the number/letter serving your stop.
4
Check direction Match the destination sign.
5
Recheck Refresh close to departure because predictions can move.
Schedule ≠ prediction: a printed timetable is the planned service. HEA is an estimated arrival. Traffic, detours, operating conditions or data availability can affect the estimate.

Important timetable note

What “ZOOM” Means on TheBus Timetables

Some limited-stop and express-style schedules use ZOOM. The official timetable explanation says a bus may run early from a designated ZOOM point and then continue serving designated stops. The exact ZOOM rule depends on the route and time period.

Do not guess Read the timetable footnote for the exact ZOOM point and hours.
Arrive early If your boarding stop is after a ZOOM point, do not plan to arrive at the last possible minute.
Use HEA Real-time arrival information is especially useful on routes using ZOOM scheduling.

Think in Corridors, Not Just Route Numbers

Honolulu routes connect with long-distance Oʻahu routes at hubs such as Ala Moana Center, downtown Honolulu, Kalihi Transit Center, rail/Skyline stations and other transit centers. A transfer may be faster than staying on one long route.

  • Find the closest urban route first.
  • Identify your major transfer center.
  • Check the onward route’s service day.
  • Verify both destination signs.
  • Use HOLO for integrated TheBus/Skyline travel.
  • Check HEA again after transferring.
