MTA B43 Bus Schedule: Greenpoint to Lefferts Gardens

The MTA B43 travels through Brooklyn between Box Street/Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint and Lincoln Road/Flatbush Avenue near Prospect Park.

The route runs through residential areas, retail corridors, subway connections and neighborhoods where nearby bus stops often serve different directions.

Northbound destination Greenpoint – Box Street
Southbound destination Lefferts Gardens – Prospect Park Station
Important streets Manhattan Avenue, Graham Avenue, Tompkins Avenue, Throop Avenue and Empire Boulevard

2 Nassau Av / Greenpoint
3 Graham Av / Williamsburg
4 Tompkins Av / Bed-Stuy
5 Brooklyn Av / Crown Heights
6 Lincoln Rd / Flatbush Av

This is a simplified corridor diagram, not a geographic street map. The exact stopping streets vary by direction.

Why the B43 Uses Different Streets in Opposite Directions

In parts of Williamsburg and Bedford-Stuyvesant, the northbound and southbound routes do not use identical streets. For example, southbound service includes Tompkins Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue, while the Greenpoint-bound stop pattern includes Throop Avenue and Kingston Avenue.

This means a stop across the road may not necessarily serve the return B43. Search for your destination in MTA Bus Time before deciding where to wait.

For wider Brooklyn and New York City bus-route instructions, including six-digit stop codes and OMNY transfers, our MTA bus timetable and live-arrival guide explains how the official route system works.

Saturday, Sunday and Holiday B43 Service

MTA B43 also runs on Saturdays and Sundays. Expect different intervals from weekdays, especially early morning and late evening.

Holiday service can follow a Saturday, Sunday or modified weekday schedule depending on the holiday. Check the relevant travel day in the official MTA schedule directory.

How Long Does Brooklyn B43 Take?

Travel time varies greatly by the specific stops and traffic. A complete end-to-end trip can take around an hour or longer during busy periods, while shorter neighborhood journeys may take only a few minutes.

Do not use one end-to-end duration as the estimated time between every two B43 stops. Search your origin and destination in the official trip planner for a stop-specific prediction.

Important 2026 PVTA Schedule Update

PVTA announced new B43 and B43E schedules beginning September 6, 2026. The Amherst-area campus schedules also changed beginning September 8, 2026.

Do not use the old 2023 B43 PDF for current travel. Older files may remain indexed online. Use PVTA’s current schedule directory and choose the B43 academic-year or no-school timetable that matches your trip.

Weekday daytime ~20 min Typical intervals during much of the main daytime service period.
Saturday daytime ~30 min Many daytime departures are spaced around half an hour apart.
Sunday ~60 min Service is generally less frequent.

Some evening trips and special school-calendar periods use wider intervals. Do not assume every B43 stop receives a bus at a fixed interval throughout the day.

First and Last PVTA B43 Service

The regular weekday service begins around 6:00 AM at Smith College. Service continues into the late evening, with some published schedule patterns extending past midnight. Saturday and Sunday start/end times differ.

PVTA B43 is particularly sensitive to school schedules and trip patterns, so use the official timetable for the exact last bus at your boarding stop rather than a general route-wide end time.

Check the official PVTA B43 weekday and weekend schedules.

Important route variation

PVTA B43 vs B43E Express: What Is the Difference?

PVTA publishes separate timetable documents for B43 Northampton–Hadley–Amherst, B43 No School and B43 Express (B43E).

Feature B43 local B43E express
Main corridor Northampton, Hadley, UMass, Amherst Northampton–Amherst express connection
Hampshire Mall Served by designated regular trips Express route does not follow the regular shopping-stop pattern
Schedule document B43 or B43 No School B43 Express timetable
Best use Local stops and shopping destinations Trips matching express stops
Do not board B43E for a B43-only stop. UMass Transportation identifies the Route 9 Hadley corridor as regular B43 service, not B43E service. Check the express stopping pattern before boarding.

How to Choose B43 or B43E

  1. Open PVTA’s official schedule directory.
  2. Find Northampton Area Routes.
  3. Choose B43 for regular local service.
  4. Choose B43 No School during the applicable break schedule.
  5. Choose B43 Express for the express service.
  6. Check whether your actual boarding stop is served.
  7. Confirm your destination and the schedule date.

Massachusetts fares

Is the PVTA B43 Bus Free in 2026?

Yes. PVTA states that regular fixed-route buses are fare-free during fiscal year 2027 under its fare-free public transit program.

Regular PVTA B43 $0 Fare-free fixed-route service
Fare period FY27 Current published program period
Important exception B79 Premium intercity service uses separate fare rules

PVTA’s current fare-free program means riders do not need to buy a regular B43 fare or pass. UMass Transportation also documents Five College student and employee travel arrangements, including identification requirements for certain semester programs.

PVTA’s systemwide fare-free notice is the relevant source for the regular B43 fare. The B79 Amherst–Worcester intercity route is explicitly excluded from the standard free-fare program.

Useful fare distinction Brooklyn B43 costs $3 for a standard adult local ride. Massachusetts B43 is fare-free under the current PVTA program. Do not use one agency’s fare rules for the other.

Verify PVTA’s current fare-free program and service updates.

Disability and accessibility

B43 Wheelchair Access, Reduced Fares and Accessible Stops

Accessible travel requires more than an accessible vehicle. Boarding surfaces, sidewalk conditions, ramps, station entrances, construction and stop placement all affect the journey.

MTA B43 vehicle access MTA provides accessible local bus service. Confirm the accessible boarding location and ask the bus operator for ramp assistance where needed.
PVTA B43 access PVTA provides accessible fixed-route transportation and separate ADA paratransit services for eligible passengers.
Stop and walking access Check the curb, crossing, sidewalk, shelter, boarding direction and any relocated stop before starting the journey.

Accessibility Checklist Before Boarding

  • Confirm the accessible bus stop.
  • Check for temporary construction.
  • Find a safe and usable curb or boarding area.
  • Check the correct direction and stop side.
  • Allow extra time for mobility-related transfers.
  • Review assistance and reduced-fare eligibility.
  • Check accessible subway or rail connections.
  • Contact the agency if access remains uncertain.

MTA accessibility services and PVTA passenger assistance information provide operator-specific resources.

Accessibility and eligibility are different questions. A reduced-fare card does not automatically grant eligibility for paratransit. Each agency has separate application and service requirements.
Service alerts and disruptions

B43 Bus Detours, Stop Closures and School Calendar Changes

Brooklyn street detours

Construction and road closures can affect Graham, Tompkins, Throop, Kingston and nearby streets. Check the official MTA B43 alerts before boarding.

PVTA school schedules

Academic-year and no-school service can change the timetable and available trips. PVTA announced B43 schedule changes effective September 6, 2026.

Live tracking differences

A scheduled departure can still appear when GPS reporting is delayed or unavailable. Compare route updates, the timetable and a live prediction.

What to Do if the B43 Is Detoured

  1. Open the official operator’s route or alert page.
  2. Find the notice affecting your travel date.
  3. Check whether the detour affects your direction.
  4. Identify skipped or relocated stops.
  5. Locate the alternative boarding stop using its official description.
  6. Confirm the accessible walking route if needed.
  7. Check the next bus again before leaving.
Do not treat an old service alert as permanent. Street closures and campus-related schedule changes can begin and end within specific dates. Always use the current notice, not a previously saved screenshot.
Practical boarding tips

B43 Rider Tips That Can Save Time

Brooklyn: Match the headsign

The bus heading to Greenpoint Box Street is not the bus heading to Lefferts Gardens Prospect Park Station. Check the display before boarding.

Brooklyn: Watch the street pairs

The return stop may not be on the opposite curb because the B43 uses different streets through parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Massachusetts: Check the school calendar

The academic-year B43 timetable may not apply during university breaks. Select the correct schedule rather than assuming regular weekday departures.

Massachusetts: Verify local vs express

If you need a Hadley Route 9 stop or Hampshire Mall, confirm the trip serves it. B43E is not automatically a substitute for a regular B43 trip.

At a stop: Arrive early

PVTA recommends being at the stop approximately 10 minutes ahead of departure. For MTA stops, arrive several minutes early and recheck Bus Time.

Before the return journey

Check the last bus in your return direction before starting the outbound trip. Weekend and late-night patterns may be different.

Troubleshooting

B43 Bus Schedule Problems and What to Do

The B43 is not at the expected stop.

Check the destination and street. In Brooklyn, the two directions can use different corridors through parts of the route.

The app shows no approaching bus.

Check the service day, next scheduled trip and route alerts. Missing GPS reporting does not automatically mean the route has stopped operating.

The PVTA timetable is different from my saved PDF.

Check the document’s effective date. PVTA implemented B43 changes in September 2026, and older PDFs may remain online.

The B43E passed my local stop.

B43E has an express stopping pattern. Confirm whether your stop is served by B43 rather than B43E.

The fare looks incorrect.

Verify the agency. Brooklyn B43 uses MTA local bus fares, whereas PVTA B43 is fare-free under its current program.

I need the next bus after midnight.

Brooklyn B43 has overnight service, but a PVTA B43 departure after midnight depends on the specific operating day and schedule. Use the correct timetable.

Before you leave

60-Second B43 Bus Checklist

  • Confirm Brooklyn MTA or Massachusetts PVTA.
  • Check whether the route is regular B43 or B43E.
  • Select the correct travel date.
  • Use the right weekday, weekend or no-school schedule.
  • Match the destination on the bus headsign.
  • Find the exact stop or stop ID.
  • Check the fare rules for your operator.
  • Open live arrivals where supported.
  • Review detours and accessible-path notices.
  • Confirm the last return bus before leaving.
