Where to board in Scranton

Lackawanna Transit Center: Address, Bays and Connections

Most COLTS fixed routes originate from or connect through the Lackawanna Transit Center.

Three Common Hub Mistakes

  3. Using the correct route number but the wrong direction or boarding position.
Viewmont Mall boarding detail Route 80 Commerce Loop uses Viewmont Mall as its starting point. Route 44 Clarks Summit also serves the Viewmont Mall area. Check your required connection if you begin in Downtown Scranton.

Boarding and payment

How to Pay When Boarding a COLTS Bus

COLTS uses an onboard farebox for cash and eligible fare cards.

Paying Cash

  1. Confirm the regular fare or qualifying reduced fare.
  2. Prepare payment before boarding.
  3. Allow exiting passengers to leave first.
  4. Insert bills and coins into the designated farebox slots.
  5. Check whether a balance card is issued.
  6. Keep any issued card for a future journey.
What if you do not have exact change? COLTS says its farebox can issue a change card containing the remaining balance. Drivers do not carry change.

Using a COLTS Pass

  1. Purchase the correct pass.
  2. Check the pass validity period.
  3. Insert it into the farebox when boarding.
  4. Wait for the acceptance confirmation.
  5. Keep it available for the next eligible ride.

Can You Buy Passes Online?

COLTS offers online purchasing for monthly, 10-ride and Day Pass products.

The agency states that online orders are processed on the next business day and mailed to the purchaser.

Student passes are not available through the online purchase process described on its pass page.

Do not buy a mailed pass for an immediate trip. If you need to ride today, use an accepted onboard payment method or check an in-person pass sales location.
Transfer policy

COLTS Bus Transfers: Cost, Validity and Rules

COLTS offers paid transfers when passengers need to continue their journey on another bus route.

Regular transfer $0.75 Purchase when boarding the first bus.
Reduced transfer $0.35 For eligible reduced-fare riders.
Validity 90 min Within the permitted transfer window on the purchase date.

How to Request a Transfer

  1. Board the first COLTS bus.
  2. Tell the driver you need to change routes.
  3. Ask for the transfer when paying the first fare.
  4. Pay the additional transfer charge.
  5. Confirm where the two routes connect.
  6. Use the transfer within its valid period and direction.

What Transfers Are Not Allowed?

COLTS transfer rules state that transfers cannot be used for a return trip or travel back toward the original starting point.

They apply to continuous-direction travel. The transfer should be made where routes intersect or within the allowed nearby transfer area.

Transfer time discrepancy in older documents Some agency calendar material references a two-hour period, while the current dedicated transfers page and route instructions state 90 minutes. Use the dedicated transfer policy or confirm with COLTS before relying on a longer window.

How to Track COLTS Buses Live Using myStop

It can be accessed from a desktop browser or the supported mobile app.

1 Open myStop Visit the COLTS myStop page.
2 Choose the route Find the correct bus number.
3 Select direction Match your destination.

5 Check arrivals Review predictions and alerts.

Open COLTS’ official myStop portal .

How to Use myStop on Your Phone

  1. Open the COLTS myStop page.
  2. Choose the Android or iPhone app link, if preferred.
  3. Find the correct COLTS service area.
  4. Select the route and stop.
  5. Review approaching buses and available predictions.

Scheduled time vs real-time arrival A printed timetable gives the planned departure. The myStop estimate uses available bus-location information and may change during traffic delays or detours.

What if a COLTS Bus Is Not Visible?

A vehicle may be temporarily missing from a tracking display because live data is unavailable.

Do not automatically treat a missing map icon as a canceled bus. Check the route timetable and contact COLTS if the information remains unclear.

However, passengers should still verify the specific pass, transfer rules and whether both routes operate on the intended day.

COLTS Snow Routes, Winter Detours and Service Alerts

Snow and icy road conditions can change COLTS bus routes and boarding locations.

COLTS publishes a dedicated snow-route list identifying services that operate differently when winter-routing procedures are activated.

Examples of COLTS Snow-Route Changes

Route 25 Snow routing can omit Valley View Terrace and Hilltop Manor.
Route 41 Snow routing can omit Allied Services.
Route 52 COLTS lists no Fallbrook service during snow routing.

These examples come from COLTS’ published snow-route guidance updated October 30, 2025.

The operator may modify additional routes based on road conditions.

Snow-Day Travel Checklist

  1. Check whether COLTS has activated snow routes.
  2. Find your route number in the official list.
  3. Check whether your normal stop is still served.
  4. Look for a temporary alternative boarding location.
  5. Check myStop for updated bus information.
  6. Allow extra walking and waiting time.

Accessible public transportation

COLTS Wheelchair Access, Reduced Fares and Paratransit

COLTS states that its regular bus vehicles are ADA compliant.

Passengers using wheelchairs or mobility devices should confirm both bus accessibility and conditions at the intended stop.

  4. Review snow routes and temporary detours.
  5. Allow enough time for boarding assistance.
  6. Bring the required reduced-fare credential if applicable.
  7. Contact COLTS when a particular accessibility need is unclear.

COLTS Shared Ride and Paratransit

COLTS also administers transportation programs including ADA complementary paratransit, SEATS, Persons with Disabilities and Medical Assistance Transportation Program services.

These programs have separate eligibility, application and reservation requirements. A fixed-route timetable is not a paratransit reservation.

Accessible Formats and Language Assistance

COLTS says schedule and program information can be supplied in accessible formats such as large print, Braille and audio.

Riders needing assistance can contact COLTS at 570-346-2061.

Travel outside Lackawanna County

COLTS vs Intercity Buses: Scranton to Other Cities

COLTS primarily operates local and regional fixed-route services in the Lackawanna County area.

Longer trips to another city may require an intercity operator instead of an ordinary COLTS route.

Greyhound Connections

Travelers planning an intercity bus trip should check the exact origin, destination, travel date, boarding address and operating carrier in the booking system.

Our Greyhound bus timetable, ticket and station guide explains how to find available trips, verify the pickup location and check baggage or transfer rules.

Trailways and Other Regional Coaches

Trailways and affiliated regional carriers use trip-specific timetables, which differ from COLTS’ local fixed-route PDFs.

See the Trailways intercity schedule and booking guide for practical steps on comparing departure times, carrier details and boarding instructions.

Intercity boarding warning Do not assume an intercity coach departs from the Lackawanna Transit Center simply because your local COLTS bus arrives there. Always use the exact location printed on the intercity ticket.
