BU Bus Schedule: Routes, Times & Stops

The BU Bus is Boston University’s free campus shuttle service, officially called “The BUS.” Its main routes connect the Charles River Campus, Fenway Campus and Medical Campus, with additional Commonwealth Avenue and nighttime service during the academic year.

In Fall 2026, the main BU shuttle lines are 1BU, Comm Ave, Fenway and Night. Shuttle schedules differ by route, day and university calendar. Students, faculty and staff can check exact departure times using the official BU Routes & Schedules page or track the next shuttle through Terrier Transit.

This guide explains which BU bus to take, operating days, important stops, free boarding rules, late-night options, Medical Campus connections, accessibility and how to check the current schedule without using outdated summer times.

Where Can I Find the Current BU Bus Schedule?

Open Boston University’s official BUS Routes & Schedules page. Select your shuttle line, choose the stop location and click View Full Schedule. The website normally shows today’s schedule first; select Change day if you are planning for another date.

1BU Mon–Fri Charles River ↔ Medical Campus
Comm Ave Mon–Fri Commonwealth Avenue campus loop
Fenway Mon–Sat Charles River ↔ Fenway Campus
Night 7 days Evening and late-night campus service
Important: there is no single BU Bus timetable. The 1BU, Comm Ave, Fenway and Night routes have different stops and operating periods. Select the correct line and date before relying on a departure time.

For the live location of an approaching shuttle, open BU’s shuttle Live View or the Terrier Transit app. Live predictions can change because of traffic, construction or operational delays.

Fall 2026 service changes

BU Shuttle Schedule Changes for Fall 2026

Boston University announced the transition from summer to academic-year shuttle service on August 18, 2026. The routes did not all restart on the same day.

Shuttle line Fall 2026 academic-year start Important detail
Comm Ave Loop Monday, August 24 Academic-year Commonwealth Avenue service resumed.
Fenway Monday, August 24 Academic-year Fenway shuttle service resumed.
Night Monday, August 24 The revised evening and late-night schedule began.
1BU Wednesday, September 2 Academic-year Charles River–Medical Campus service replaced the summer schedule.
Do not use summer 2026 departure times for fall travel. During summer, BU operated a reduced 1BU schedule with approximately 30-minute service in much of the day. The university announced a return to academic-year service on September 2, so the summer frequency should not be treated as the current fall timetable.

BU also ran special move-in shuttle stops and service on selected August dates. Those temporary move-in arrangements should not automatically be treated as year-round stops.

Boston University BUS Routes: Which Line Should You Take?

The main Boston University shuttle network is designed around the university’s three campus areas and their different travel needs. The correct line depends on whether you are going to classes along Commonwealth Avenue, the Fenway Campus, Boston University Medical Campus or a late-night destination.

1BU

Charles River ↔ Medical Campus

Best for: Traveling between the Charles River Campus and the Boston University Medical Campus near Albany Street.

Normal service: Monday–Friday during the academic-year schedule.

Practical tip: This is the main BU-operated intercampus route for students, researchers and employees who need to reach the Medical Campus.

Check 1BU current schedule
COMM AVE

Commonwealth Avenue Loop

Best for: Traveling between West, Central and East Campus areas along Commonwealth Avenue.

Normal service: Monday–Friday during the academic year.

Practical tip: Useful when the walk along Commonwealth Avenue is inconvenient, particularly between university buildings or during bad weather.

Check Comm Ave schedule
FENWAY

Charles River ↔ Fenway Campus

Best for: Traveling between the main Charles River Campus and BU’s Fenway-area academic and residential locations.

Normal service: Monday–Saturday during the academic year.

Practical tip: Fenway service may differ during summer and university breaks, so do not use a fall schedule for a July trip.

Check Fenway schedule
NIGHT

Evening & Late-Night Shuttle

Best for: Getting around the Charles River and Fenway campuses during evening or late-night periods.

Normal service: Monday–Sunday evenings during the academic year.

Practical tip: The Night route is a separate service. Do not assume it follows the full daytime 1BU Medical Campus route.

Check Night shuttle schedule
Route names are more useful than bus appearance. Before boarding, check whether the vehicle is displaying 1BU, Comm Ave, Fenway or Night. Two BU shuttles may serve some of the same campus streets but continue to different destinations.
Academic-year operating information

BU Bus Schedule 2026: Weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays

The table below separates verified service days from exact stop-level departures. BU publishes its current full timetable through an interactive route-and-stop selector, so a first or last time displayed for one line should not be copied to another.

Route Normal academic-year service Departure times Where to check
1BU Monday–Friday Date and stop specific Select 1BU in official schedule
Comm Ave Monday–Friday Date and stop specific Select Comm Ave
Fenway Monday–Saturday Date and stop specific Select Fenway
Night Monday–Sunday evenings Late evening and overnight service varies by day Select Night and travel date
Albany / E Newton Monday–Friday 5–11 AM and 4–11 PM, approximately every 15 minutes Separate Medical Residence shuttle page
Why aren’t all first and last departures listed here? BU’s current scheduling interface requires a line, stop and date selection. The published static pages do not reliably provide every Fall 2026 departure. Rather than inventing times, use the exact official selection process explained below.

How to Get an Exact Departure Time

  1. Open the official BU Routes & Schedules page.
  2. Select your bus line: 1BU, Comm Ave, Fenway or Night.
  3. Choose your actual boarding stop.
  4. Click View Full Schedule.
  5. Use Change day if you are traveling on another date.
  6. Read the departure time for the selected stop.
  7. Compare it with the next live arrival in Terrier Transit before leaving.

The visual compares the general scope of service, not bus frequency or a numerical percentage. Break schedules are announced separately and may differ from ordinary term-time service.

Main intercampus connection

1BU Shuttle: Charles River Campus to BU Medical Campus

The 1BU route connects Boston University’s Charles River Campus with its Medical Campus, making it important for academic appointments, research work, hospital-related campus visits and cross-campus meetings.

1BU Campus Connection Overview

1 West Campus
2 Comm Ave
3 Central Campus
4 East Campus
5 Medical Area
6 Albany Street

Simplified campus-area schematic, not a complete current stop sequence or geographic route map. Use BU’s route map for the precise stop order and travel direction.

Common Landmarks to Search in the BU Stop List

Depending on the current route version and travel direction, BU shuttle information has identified stops or areas around Harry Agganis Way, Amory Street, St. Mary’s Street, Silber Way, the George Sherman Union, Albany Street and the Medical Campus.

These are useful landmarks for searching the current stop selector. Not every line serves every landmark, and temporary move-in or summer stops may not be part of the ordinary academic-year route.

Going to the Medical Campus

Select 1BU, choose a Charles River Campus stop and verify the direction toward the Medical Campus. Check whether your destination is nearer 710 Albany Street or another campus entrance.

Returning to Charles River Campus

Choose the 1BU return direction, confirm the boarding location at the Medical Campus and check the last available trip from your stop.

Medical appointment tip A shuttle’s arrival at the Medical Campus does not necessarily put you at the correct hospital, dental school, clinic or office entrance. Use the destination’s building address and account for walking time from the shuttle stop.

How to Find a BU Shuttle Stop on the Map

  1. Open the BU Bus homepage.
  2. Select the official route map or Routes & Schedules.
  3. Choose the route that serves your destination.
  4. Find the stop closest to your building.
  5. Check the direction and whether the stop is currently served.
  6. Use Terrier Transit or Live View to check the next shuttle.
  7. Confirm the physical BU shuttle stop before waiting.
Campus-side tip A stop along Commonwealth Avenue can be close to multiple MBTA Green Line platforms and BU shuttle stops. Check the BU sign and the route name rather than assuming every bus waiting nearby is the same service.

For public-bus connections around Commonwealth Avenue, Brighton and Kenmore, our Route 57 bus schedule and Kenmore–Brighton corridor guide provides the MBTA alternative. Route 57 is a separate public bus and follows different fare rules from the free BU Shuttle.

Evening and late-night transportation

BU Night Shuttle Schedule: What to Know

Boston University’s Night route operates during evenings and late-night periods on the Charles River and Fenway campuses. BU identifies it as a seven-day evening service during the academic year.

Normal days Mon–Sun Academic-year evening service
Fall 2026 start Aug 24 Revised nighttime schedule began
Live arrivals Track Use Terrier Transit

Does the BU Night Shuttle Run All Night?

Do not assume that the Night route operates 24 hours. Its final trip varies according to the university’s schedule and the particular day. BU’s 2026 move-in information identified evening service beginning at 7 PM, but the actual last departure should be confirmed using the current Night schedule.

Practical Late-Night Boarding Steps

  1. Open Terrier Transit.
  2. Select the BU Night line.
  3. Choose the stop nearest your current location.
  4. Check whether the Night route serves your intended destination.
  5. Review the next and last departures.
  6. Wait at the marked stop in a safe, accessible location.
  7. Check that the arriving shuttle displays the Night route designation.
Late-night safety tip Save your destination and check the return route before leaving an event or study session. A bus running at 8 PM does not guarantee a departure at 2 AM. When you feel unsafe or require urgent campus police assistance, BU lists its Police Department at 617-353-2121.

For additional nighttime transportation guidance, see Boston University’s official late-night transportation resources.

Medical Campus and residence connections

BU Medical Campus Shuttles: Albany, East Newton and Newmarket

Not every shuttle near the BU Medical Campus is a 1BU bus. The area also has a Medical Student Residence shuttle and separately operated Newmarket Business Improvement District services.

Albany / East Newton Street Shuttle

BU publishes a separate shuttle connecting the Medical Student Residence with Medical Campus locations.

Morning service 5–11 AM Weekdays
Evening service 4–11 PM Weekdays
Approximate interval 15 min Depending on traffic and conditions

Published Medical Residence Shuttle Stops

  1. Medical Student Residence — 815 Albany Street
  2. 720 Albany Street — drop-off only
  3. Talbot Green
Drop-off-only warning BU identifies 720 Albany Street as a drop-off-only stop on this shuttle. Do not assume you can board there. Check the permitted pickup location for your direction.

Open the official Albany / East Newton Medical Residence shuttle schedule.

Newmarket BID Shuttle Services

Boston University and Boston Medical Center community members also have access to designated shuttles operated by the Newmarket Business Improvement District. These vehicles are marked with Newmarket BID signage and are not operated as regular BU BUS routes.

Newmarket shuttle Weekday operating hours Approximate frequency Important connection
Albany Street Garage 5–9 AM and 4–10 PM 15 minutes 610 and 710 Albany Street garages
Ruggles Station 5 AM–8 PM 20 minutes Ruggles MBTA Orange Line and regional buses
Andrew Station 5 AM–7 PM 20 minutes Andrew Red Line and Newmarket commuter rail area

BU states that eligible BU and Boston Medical Center students and employees can use the Newmarket services at no charge, but must carry and show a BU or BMC ID when boarding.

Do not confuse the operators. A Newmarket BID shuttle is not the 1BU route. If you need the Red Line at Andrew or Orange Line at Ruggles, verify the Newmarket shuttle’s stop list. If you need Charles River Campus, check 1BU.

Check the official Newmarket shuttle routes, stops and operating hours.

Fare and boarding eligibility

Is the BU Shuttle Free?

Yes. The Boston University Shuttle is free for eligible BU students, faculty and staff. University guidance advises passengers to be prepared to show their BU identification to the driver.

BU students Free Eligible campus shuttle service
BU employees Free Faculty and staff
BU ID Carry it May be requested
MBTA fare Separate Applies to public bus and subway rides

How to Board the BU Bus

  1. Go to the designated BU shuttle stop.
  2. Check the vehicle’s route name before boarding.
  3. Have your university identification ready.
  4. Allow exiting passengers to leave first.
  5. Follow the driver’s boarding instructions.
  6. Move safely into the vehicle and use available seating or handrails.
  7. Watch for your destination stop and request assistance when needed.

Can Visitors Ride the BU Bus?

BU describes The BUS primarily as transportation for its university community. If you are a prospective student, family visitor, event attendee or external visitor, confirm your eligibility or event-specific shuttle arrangement with Transportation Services rather than assuming unrestricted public access.

Free does not mean the same as the MBTA. The BU Shuttle is not an MBTA public bus. Boston’s MBTA buses and subway normally require the appropriate fare or pass, even when they operate beside BU shuttle stops.
Real-time BU shuttle tracking

How to Track the BU Bus Live

Boston University provides shuttle live tracking through its Live View service and the Terrier Transit app. Terrier Transit is powered by Moovit and can combine university shuttle information with MBTA, walking and cycling directions.

1 Open tracker Use BU Live View or Terrier Transit.
2 Select line Choose 1BU, Comm Ave, Fenway or Night.
3 Choose stop Match your actual boarding location.
4 Read arrival Look for a live predicted time.
5 Check alerts Recheck before walking to the stop.
BU Live View

Open Boston University shuttle Live View
Terrier Transit App

Use live shuttle arrivals, trip planning, route maps and service-alert information.

Open the official Terrier Transit app page
Scheduled vs predicted arrival A timetable shows when a shuttle is planned to arrive. Live tracking uses available GPS or operational information to estimate its arrival. If a predicted time is missing, it does not automatically mean the route has stopped operating.

Useful Terrier Transit Features

  • Estimated arrivals for BU shuttle lines
  • Bus and MBTA route comparison
  • Walking directions to stops
  • Service alerts and disruptions
  • Favorite routes and places
  • Get-off guidance and trip planning

If the app shows a bus farther away than expected, check the departure again rather than assuming it will arrive at the original scheduled minute. Boston traffic and temporary campus construction can affect shuttle movements.

BU Shuttle vs Boston public transit

BU Bus Connections to MBTA Green Line, Ruggles and Kenmore

The BU Shuttle is designed primarily around university destinations. The MBTA operates the wider public transportation system, including the Green Line, local buses, commuter rail and accessible transit services.

Commonwealth Avenue The MBTA Green Line B Branch serves the Charles River Campus corridor. It can be useful for longer public-transit trips beyond BU.
Kenmore and Fenway Nearby Green Line stations and MBTA bus routes provide connections outside the BU shuttle network.
Medical Campus Public MBTA buses and Newmarket shuttles can connect the area with Ruggles, Andrew and other transit services.

When Should You Choose the MBTA Instead of The BUS?

Travel situation BU Shuttle MBTA option
West Campus to Central Campus Comm Ave Loop or another serving BU line Green Line B or walking
Charles River to Medical Campus 1BU Public bus or subway itinerary, possibly with transfers
Charles River to Fenway Campus Fenway route Green Line or nearby buses, depending on destination
Fenway to Ruggles or Kendall May not provide the full public-transit connection Check current MBTA Route 85 and other routes

For a citywide overview of the public-bus network, our MBTA bus schedule, route and fare guide for Boston explains official MBTA departure tools, route directions, public-bus payment and transfers. These policies are separate from the free university shuttle.

Students traveling between Fenway, Ruggles, Kendall/MIT and Somerville should also review our MBTA Route 85 Fenway–Ruggles connection guide. The MBTA redesigned that route in April 2026, combining the former CT2 service with Route 85.

How to Compare BU and MBTA Trips

  1. Enter the full address or building name of your destination.
  2. Check whether a BU shuttle line reaches the same campus area.
  3. Open Terrier Transit to compare available alternatives.
  4. Read the walking and transfer sections.
  5. Confirm whether an MBTA fare is required.
  6. Compare scheduled arrival times, not only the bus ride itself.
  7. Choose the route with enough time for your class, appointment or work shift.

If the first trip-planning result is confusing, our Google Maps transit directions and bus-stop guide explains how to compare routes, walking paths, boarding directions and scheduled versus live times. Check the university’s own tracker for the final BU shuttle information.

Accessibility and disability support

Is the Boston University Shuttle Wheelchair Accessible?

Yes. Boston University states that its shuttle buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts as part of its accessible campus transportation system.

Accessible vehicles BU identifies wheelchair-accessible shuttle equipment for campus transportation.
Accessible stops Boarding accessibility also depends on the sidewalk, curb, approach and any temporary construction.
Accessible campus routes BU provides accessible building and campus-route information, including entrances and curb-cut information.

Step-by-Step Accessible Shuttle Planning

  1. Open the official BU shuttle route map.
  2. Select the shuttle line serving your intended destination.
  3. Check the current boarding location and nearby accessible path.
  4. Review any university construction or service notices.
  5. Use Terrier Transit for the next available bus.
  6. Allow enough time for accessible boarding and any transfers.
  7. Contact Transportation Services or Disability & Access Services if additional assistance is needed.
Accessibility information gain An accessible bus does not automatically guarantee an unobstructed path to the stop. BU has a large urban campus with busy intersections, renovation projects and changing pedestrian conditions. Check both the shuttle and the path to the building.

View Boston University’s official campus accessibility resources.

University calendar changes

BU Bus Service During Holidays, Spring Break and Summer

The BU Shuttle does not follow a single year-round timetable. Boston University changes service during academic recesses, summer programs, move-in, commencement and other university events.

Fall and spring semesters Standard academic-year routes operate according to their published weekday, Saturday and nighttime patterns.
Summer Some routes may operate less frequently or suspend service. BU publishes separate summer shuttle changes.
Holidays and university breaks BU may provide special routes, reduced frequency or different operating days.

Thanksgiving Break: What to Check

Thanksgiving is a particularly important schedule exception because students, employees and Medical Campus riders may need shuttle transportation when normal classes are not operating.

Boston University has used temporary Thanksgiving shuttle patterns in previous years, including modified night-route stops and special service windows. Those historical details should not be assumed to apply automatically to Thanksgiving 2026.

Do not rely on an old Thanksgiving timetable. Check the latest university Transportation Services news and the selected date in the official route scheduler. A 2025 Thanksgiving shuttle announcement does not establish the 2026 schedule.

Before Traveling During a Break

  1. Open BU Transportation Services news.
  2. Look for the relevant break or holiday announcement.
  3. Check whether 1BU, Fenway, Comm Ave or Night is operating.
  4. Select the exact travel date in the schedule viewer.
  5. Check special or omitted stops.
  6. Review the next live arrival shortly before travel.

Official schedule micro-guide

How to Check the BU Bus Schedule Step by Step

Follow this procedure when you need a precise departure for class, a laboratory appointment, a Medical Campus trip or a late-night return.

  1. Open BU Transportation Services. Visit the official BUS Routes & Schedules page.
  2. Select the correct line. Choose 1BU, Comm Ave, Fenway or Night.
  3. Choose your stop location. Match the campus building or intersection where you intend to board.
  4. Select View Full Schedule. Open the timetable for that specific line and stop.
  5. Check the travel day. Today’s service is shown by default; use Change day for another date.
  6. Find your departure. Read the time for your selected stop, paying attention to any operating-day notes.
  7. Check your destination. Make sure the chosen line actually continues to your intended campus area.
  8. Open Live View. Select the same line and check the bus’s current location or estimated arrival.
  9. Review university announcements. Look for schedule changes, move-in routes, breaks or temporary stop changes.
  10. Prepare to board. Bring your BU ID, reach the correct stop before departure and match the shuttle’s route sign.

Common BU shuttle problems

BU Bus Not Arriving? Common Problems and Fixes

The shuttle is missing from Live View.

Check whether the route is scheduled to operate on your date. Refresh the tracker, check university notices and verify that you selected the correct line.

The timetable shows a different stop.

Make sure you selected the correct campus and travel direction. Some stops differ between routes or special-service periods.

I need the Medical Campus on Saturday.

Check the current weekend and special-service timetable. Do not assume weekday 1BU academic-year service operates unchanged on Saturday.

My Fenway shuttle is not running in summer.

BU adjusts or suspends selected routes during summer. Check the relevant summer service announcement and consider available MBTA connections.

I missed the last Night shuttle.

Check official BU late-night resources and the current MBTA schedule. Do not assume the shuttle runs continuously throughout the night.

I am waiting for a Newmarket shuttle.

Look for the separate Newmarket BID vehicle and its published schedule. It is not the same service as Boston University’s 1BU route.
