How to Choose a Route Without Guessing

If you are unfamiliar with Indianapolis transit, start with the destination rather than selecting a route number at random. Our transit bus schedule planning and transfer guide explains route directions, service-day changes, timepoints and stop IDs in a way that is useful across many transit agencies.

Bus times and service hours

IndyGo Bus Schedule: Weekday, Saturday and Sunday

Shared BRT Stations

The Red and Purple lines share stations from the Carson Transit Center through the Meridian/38th Street area.

Where both routes serve a station, riders may see more frequent combined bus arrivals, but must still confirm which line reaches their actual destination.

Purple Line Map & Details
Red Line vs. Purple Line Use the Red Line for the Broad Ripple-to-Southside corridor. Use the Purple Line for the northeast corridor toward Lawrence. Some downtown and north-central stations are shared, but the routes diverge beyond that common section.

How to Board the Purple Line

  1. Find your station and the correct destination side.
  2. Check the digital arrival display where available.
  3. Have a valid MyKey+ fare or accepted ticket.
  4. Scan or tap at the validator when boarding.
  5. Keep proof of payment available for inspection.

The current MyKey+ system uses validators on buses, including BRT vehicles. Do not rely on an older instruction that requires purchasing a ticket from a station vending machine: IndyGo has been removing those machines during the 2026 payment transition.

IndyGo Route 8: Indianapolis Airport Bus Schedule

Route 8 Washington connects Indianapolis International Airport (IND) with Downtown Indianapolis and destinations along the Washington Street corridor.

This is a regular IndyGo bus route, not a private airport shuttle or the future Blue Line.

Airport connection

Use Route 8 for scheduled public-bus service at Indianapolis International Airport.

Downtown connection

Check the direction toward Downtown and the relevant transfers in the central Indianapolis area.

East Washington

Selected Route 8 service continues across the Washington Street corridor toward eastside destinations.

Selected Route 8 Airport Timepoint Departures

The official Route 8 webpage displays the following sample morning times under its Indianapolis Airport timepoint. The current route page may show a different set of departures when the direction or service day is changed.

Example Airport timepoint Planning guidance
1 5:04 AM Confirm correct day and direction.
2 5:34 AM Check stop and service alert.
3 6:03 AM Verify current arrival prediction.
4 6:31 AM Check route destination.
5 6:57 AM Allow extra time for airport travel.
Construction can change Route 8 boarding Blue Line construction on Washington Street has caused Route 8 detours, closed stops and temporary pickup locations during 2026. Verify the current airport and downtown stop instructions using the operator’s route page.

Is the IndyGo Blue Line Already Operating?

No. As of October 2026, the Blue Line is still under construction. IndyGo schedules its Blue Line rapid-transit project to open in 2028. Route 8 is the established public bus serving the airport corridor now.

For a separate explanation of how different transit agencies use Route 8 and why the route number alone cannot identify a timetable, see our Route 8 bus schedule comparison guide.

Local bus timetable examples

IndyGo Route 3 and Route 7 Schedule Changes

IndyGo redesigned East Michigan Street service in June 2026 to improve frequency and simplify bus operations.

Route 3 — East Michigan

Route 3 primarily serves the East Michigan/Arlington corridor and Community Hospital North-area connections.

Weekday trips operate approximately every 15 minutes on the main corridor, while the longer hospital service is served by alternating trips.

Official Route 3
Route 7 — West Michigan

Former western Route 3 service became the new Route 7.

Typical scheduling is approximately every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly on weekends. Riders continuing to the East Side generally need to transfer at Carson Transit Center.

Find Route 7 Schedule

Selected Route 3 Transit Center Times

These are sample published departures for one Route 3 Transit Center timetable section labeled Bay F. Always choose the correct direction and service day in the current route page.

Timepoint Example departure Bay
Transit Center 6:15 AM F
Transit Center 6:45 AM F
Transit Center 7:15 AM F
Transit Center 7:45 AM F

Never combine Route 3 and Route 7 into one timetable Since June 2026, they are separately numbered services. A bus traveling from West Michigan Street to East Michigan Street may require a transfer rather than remaining on the same bus.
2026 network changes

IndyGo October 11, 2026 Service Changes

IndyGo announced another service update effective Sunday, October 11, 2026. The update is important because a timetable used on October 9 may not match the timetable used on October 11.

Route 5

Inbound routing will be shortened. It will no longer travel via Millersville Road and Meadows Parkway, while continuing to serve Meadows Drive.

Weekend frequency is expected to improve from approximately 65 minutes to a regular 60-minute pattern.

Route 25

The updated alignment reflects the West 16th Street Bridge closure and incorporates designated substitute stops along its detour.

Other timetable updates

Minor timing adjustments affect Routes 5, 21, 25, 26, 30 and 82 to improve schedule reliability.

Travel-date reminder Before October 11, use the currently active timetable. On and after October 11, use the new effective-date schedule provided by IndyGo. A future PDF may already be visible online before it becomes active.
2026 fares and passes

How Much Is the IndyGo Bus Fare?

IndyGo raised its fixed-route base fare on January 1, 2026. The current standard fare covers two hours of qualifying travel, and MyKey+ can automatically limit the amount spent through daily and weekly fare capping.

IndyGo local and BRT fare

MyKey+ rider instructions

How to Pay for an IndyGo Bus in 2026

IndyGo launched MyKey+ in July 2026. The system supports mobile QR-code tickets, account-based fares and reloadable smartcards.

1 Choose MyKey+

Get a MyKey+ card or install the current MyKey+ mobile app.

2 Add funds

Use the mobile app, online portal or an approved reload location.

3 Find your bus

Check route, direction and boarding location.

4 Validate payment

Tap the card or scan the QR code at the bus validator.

5 Keep using one method

Use the same card or app token to receive eligible fare-capping benefits.

Can I Still Pay Cash on IndyGo?

Yes. IndyGo continues to accept exact cash on regular buses. You can purchase a qualifying two-hour fare or day-pass product using the current blue-and-white magnetic-stripe paper ticket system.

Bus drivers do not make change. MyKey+ fares themselves are not purchased directly from the onboard farebox.

Do not use the old MyKey card or app The former MyKey system stopped working on September 1, 2026. The current fare system is MyKey+. If you still have an old MyKey balance, contact the customer care desk for assistance rather than attempting to use the expired card when boarding.

How Does Fare Capping Work?

Pay as you ride

Use MyKey+ for qualifying trips. The system records fares under the selected token.

Reach the cap

When eligible spending reaches the daily or weekly cap, additional qualifying rides during that period are not charged.

Stay consistent

Use the same MyKey+ card or mobile QR token for trips you want counted toward that cap.

How to Track an IndyGo Bus Live

IndyGo’s Track My Bus feature and MyStop technology can display vehicle positions and available arrival predictions. For accurate results, choose the specific route, direction and stop rather than searching only for a bus number.

1 Open tracker

Use IndyGo Track My Bus or the MyStop application.

2 Choose route

Select Route 8, Route 90, Route 92 or another service.

3 Select direction

Confirm the destination or route branch.

4 Find your stop

Use the stop name, nearby street or available stop ID.

5 Check again

Review the prediction and rider alerts before leaving.

Tracker reliability notice A missing prediction does not automatically mean a trip has been canceled. Vehicle GPS reporting can fail, and buses may be delayed or temporarily diverted. Compare the official timetable with current alerts.
Transfer and trip planning

How to Transfer Between IndyGo Routes

Transfers are common when traveling between neighborhoods, the airport, Downtown and rapid transit corridors.

Local bus to local bus

Find the connecting route, check the correct direction and ensure that your fare remains valid during the transfer.

Local bus to Red/Purple Line

Find the relevant rapid station and board the correct BRT line. The Red and Purple lines share part of their route but have different final destinations.

Route 3 to Route 7

Travel between East Michigan and West Michigan corridors may now require a Carson Transit Center transfer because the routes are separate.

How to Avoid Paying More Than Necessary

  1. Check how many routes your journey requires.
  2. Confirm your ticket’s validity period.
  3. Use the same MyKey+ payment method when appropriate.
  4. Validate on each boarding as required.
  5. Check MyKey+ daily or weekly cap eligibility.
Transfer example A passenger traveling from the airport to a northeast Indianapolis destination may need Route 8 followed by another local route or rapid line. The exact transfer point and duration depend on the day, direction and current detours.
Accessibility and reduced fares

IndyGo Wheelchair Access, Half Fares and IndyGo Access

IndyGo operates accessible fixed-route buses and offers separate IndyGo Access paratransit services for eligible riders.

Wheelchair Access

Check ramp availability, securement rules and accessible boarding locations.

Accessible BRT Stations

Red and Purple Line stations use accessible station designs; detours may require alternative stops.

Half-Fare Programs

Eligible seniors, youths, riders with disabilities and other qualifying groups may use reduced fares after completing the required process.

IndyGo Access

Separate paratransit eligibility, booking rules, operating area and fares apply.

IndyGo Access payment distinction MyKey+ is for fixed-route fares and is not the payment system for IndyGo Access paratransit fares. IndyGo Access uses its own current payment arrangements, including Access Wallet.
Weekend and holiday schedules

Does IndyGo Run on Sunday and Holidays?

IndyGo provides year-round transit service, but individual routes may have reduced frequencies or different start and end times on Sundays and major holidays.

Saturday Service

Many routes operate a Saturday timetable with different departure times and intervals from weekdays.

Sunday Service

Red and Purple Line service is published at approximately 7 AM–10 PM. Local routes follow their own Sunday patterns.

Holiday Service

Most observed holidays follow Sunday schedules, but IndyGo identifies exceptions, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth.

Holiday rule Do not assume a holiday means no bus service, and do not assume it means the usual weekday timetable. Check IndyGo’s official holiday page for the actual date.
