Route 22 vs Rapid 522: Which One Should You Take?

Route 22 and Rapid 522 share important parts of the El Camino/Alum Rock corridor, but they do not have identical stopping patterns. The correct choice depends on whether your exact boarding and exit stops are served.

Route 22 – Local/Frequent More local stops along the corridor. Useful when your destination is between Rapid stops.
Rapid 522 – Limited-Stop Stops at selected locations. Often more convenient for longer trips when both ends are served.

For a closer breakdown of the Palo Alto–Eastridge corridor, major timepoints, direction-specific stops, and local bus departures, see our Route 22 bus timetable and stop-by-stop guide.

VTA Bus Times: How Often Do Buses Run?

VTA publishes a frequency chart summarizing how many minutes usually separate services at different times of day. The following figures come from VTA’s April 27, 2026 frequency chart and describe typical scheduled daytime service, not a live departure board.

Route Weekday Daytime Saturday Daytime Sunday/Holiday Daytime
Rapid 500 Every 10 min Every 20 min Every 20 min
Rapid 522 Every 15 min Every 15 min Every 15 min
Rapid 523 Every 20 min Every 20 min Every 20 min
Rapid 568 Every 30 min Not listed Not listed
22 Every 15 min Every 15 min Every 15 min
23 Every 15 min Every 15 min Every 15 min
26 Every 15 min Every 20 min Every 20 min
60 Every 15 min Every 20 min Every 20 min
68 Every 15 min Every 20 min Every 20 min
70 Every 15 min Every 20 min Every 20 min

Important: Frequency varies at night and on route segments with different operating patterns. The listed figures should not be read as an exact departure every 15 or 20 minutes from your particular stop.

Visual Comparison: Weekday Daytime Frequency

The shorter the scheduled interval, the more often buses generally run. This visual uses minutes between trips, not a service quality rating.

Rapid 500 10 min
Route 22 15 min
Route 60 15 min
Rapid 523 20 min
Rapid 568 30 min
Critical detail: A frequency chart is not a list of exact arrivals. Some buses start or end partway along a route, and actual departures differ by stop. Consult the latest selected-date timetable.

How to Read Actual VTA Departure Times

VTA’s route pages publish major timepoints rather than listing every intermediate bus stop in one table. The following examples illustrate complete trips visible in the published schedules; they are not live predictions, universal first buses, or guarantees for a future travel date.

Route & Scheduled Example Departure Intermediate Stop Arrival
22 – Palo Alto to Eastridge Palo Alto TC, 4:34 AM Santa Clara TC, 5:15 AM Eastridge TC, 5:51 AM
60 – Winchester to Milpitas Winchester Station, 6:20 AM SJC Terminal A, 6:54 AM; Terminal B, 6:56 AM Milpitas BART, 7:18 AM
70 – Capitol to Milpitas Capitol Station, 5:46 AM Berryessa BART, 6:30 AM Milpitas BART, 6:48 AM
How to use these examples: Find the same row in the official route schedule and verify the active timetable version, service day, direction, and stop. A dash means a particular trip does not serve that timepoint.

First and Last Bus Times

There is no single first or last VTA bus. Each route operates on its own service span, which can change by direction and service day. Some routes operate late into the night; others operate only on weekdays or have shorter service periods.

Weekday Service Select Monday–Friday on the official schedule. Check early morning and late-evening trips from the correct terminal.
Saturday Service Select Saturday separately. Frequency and the first or last trip may differ from weekday service.
Sunday & Holiday Use the Sunday/Holiday table when directed by VTA. Do not assume that every local or express route operates.
Rapid and Express differences

VTA Rapid vs Local vs Express Buses

Local / Frequent Local routes stop more frequently. Frequent routes generally offer shorter scheduled intervals at major times of day.
Rapid Rapid 500, 522, 523, and 568 stop at selected locations. VTA advises that a Rapid bus may depart up to five minutes before its posted time, except at its starting point.
Express Express routes such as 101–104 are a separate fare category, with adult Express prices different from the standard local/Rapid fare.
Rapid bus boarding rule: Arrive at least five minutes before the published schedule time. VTA explicitly states that Rapid buses may leave early from intermediate stops when conditions allow.

Rapid 568 has a different weekday-oriented schedule from Rapid 500 or 522. If you are traveling to Gilroy on a Saturday or Sunday, compare available regular Route 68 service rather than assuming a Rapid 568 departure will appear.

2026 ticket prices

VTA Bus Fare, Day Pass & Monthly Pass Prices

VTA fare prices depend on rider category and whether the trip uses standard or Express bus service. These are the amounts listed on the official VTA fares page when checked on October 9, 2026.

Adult (19–64) $2.50 Single ride

Day pass: $7.50
Monthly pass: $90

Youth (5–18) $1.25 Single ride

Day pass: $3.75
Monthly pass: $35

Senior / Disabled $1.00 Single ride

Day pass: $3
Monthly pass: $30

Adult Express $5.00 Single ride

Day pass: $15
Monthly pass: $180

How Do You Pay Your VTA Bus Fare?

Clipper Tag your Clipper card when boarding. A paid single ride allows two hours of free VTA bus/light rail transfers under the published fare rules.
Contactless Bank Card VTA accepts supported contactless bank cards and mobile wallet payments for adult fares. Check current Clipper contactless payment conditions.
Cash Pay the applicable fare with exact change. Do not assume cash includes the same transfer benefits as Clipper.
Money-saving example: The adult Clipper Day Pass Accumulator limits eligible local ride charges to the $7.50 day-pass amount. It is not necessary to assume each new local boarding costs another $2.50 after the daily cap is reached.

Important Fare Exceptions

  • Children younger than five ride free under VTA’s published fare policy.
  • Adult Express trips require the Express fare. A local-to-Express transfer can involve an additional surcharge.
  • Eligible youth and senior/disabled riders may use Express service without the standard adult Express upgrade.
  • Monthly passes are calendar-month products rather than passes valid for any rolling 31-day period.
  • Regional connections to BART, Caltrain, ACE, and other operators have their own payment and transfer arrangements.

VTA Route 60: SJC Airport Bus Schedule & Stops

Route 60 is particularly useful for travelers arriving at or departing from San José Mineta International Airport (SJC). It connects the airport terminals with transit at Santa Clara Transit Center, Metro Station, Milpitas BART, and Winchester Station along its operating pattern.

Route 60 Boarding Sequence – Illustrative Northbound Trip

The diagram shows an explanatory stop sequence, not an exact street map. Some scheduled buses begin or finish partway along the route, so read the complete timetable row rather than assuming every trip visits every endpoint.

Airport Terminal A Check the current VTA notice before walking to the bus stop. VTA has posted a Terminal A stop relocation notice beginning March 24, 2026.
Airport Terminal B Confirm your travel direction and stop position. Do not assume both terminal stops share identical boarding locations.
Connecting Services Santa Clara Transit Center serves regional rail connections; Milpitas BART connects with regional rapid transit.

For airport-specific departure examples, transit-center bay guidance, official PDF details, and the Terminal A relocation warning, read our Route 60 airport bus schedule and terminal connection guide.

Important VTA Bus Stops and Transit Centers

Major transit centers are useful when switching between VTA buses, light rail, BART, Caltrain, or other services. However, a transit center may have multiple boarding bays and several bus routes traveling in different directions.

San Jose Diridon Station Major regional interchange for VTA and rail connections, including Caltrain.
Berryessa/North San Jose BART Useful VTA and BART interchange, including Rapid 500 and routes serving northern San Jose.
Milpitas BART Major interchange for VTA Routes 60, 70, 77, and other northern county services.
Santa Clara Transit Center Transit interchange used by Route 22, Route 60, and additional connections.
Eastridge Transit Center Important transfer point for east San Jose routes including 22, 26, 70, and Rapid 522.
Palo Alto Transit Center Western terminal area for Route 22 and Rapid 522, with local and regional connections.
Winchester Station Light rail interchange and terminal area for VTA Route 60.
Capitol Station VTA light rail and bus interchange, including Route 70 and other corridors.
Gilroy Transit Center South County interchange for Route 68, Rapid 568, and local services.
Stop ID and bay rule: At Eastridge, Milpitas BART, Palo Alto, or Diridon, two routes—or two directions of the same route—may board at different bays. Confirm the exact stop name, direction, bay number, and any temporary relocation in the current VTA schedule.
BART and east San Jose connection

VTA Route 70: Milpitas, Berryessa & Eastridge Transfers

Route 70 is useful for trips between Milpitas BART, Berryessa BART, Eastridge, and Capitol Station. VTA’s schedule contains trips that terminate before the far end of the route, so not every scheduled departure continues through all stations.

Northbound Travel Check the route’s Berryessa BART and Milpitas BART columns to determine whether the selected trip reaches your final destination.
Southbound Travel Check Eastridge and Capitol Station times. Do not assume the bus continues beyond the last listed timepoint.

Our Route 70 bus timetable and Milpitas–Capitol stop guide provides additional direction-specific explanations useful when planning the connection.

Why Your VTA Bus May Not Arrive at the Printed Time

Published Schedule The planned arrival/departure for the selected service day, based on the current timetable.
Live Prediction An updated estimated time based on real-time trip or vehicle information, where available.
Service Alert A notice about detours, stop relocations, cancellations, or other service disruptions.

VTA timetable columns show major timepoints. Stops between those timepoints are still served according to the route, but may not appear individually in the published main table. Use a stop-specific prediction for a more precise estimate.

Recommended arrival buffer: VTA recommends arriving at least five minutes before the scheduled bus. Allow more time when carrying luggage, using a transit center, or making an important rail connection.
Regional connections

VTA Transfers to BART, Caltrain & Light Rail

BART Milpitas and Berryessa/North San Jose are key transit interchanges. Confirm the BART fare separately.
Caltrain Diridon, Santa Clara, Mountain View, and Palo Alto connections may help riders reach regional rail.
VTA Light Rail Blue, Green, and Orange lines connect bus riders to rail stations throughout the network.
ACE & Other Systems Some transit centers connect with additional regional services. Check agency-specific schedules and fare policies.

VTA provides two hours of free local bus/light rail transfers for qualifying Clipper single-ride payments. This should not be confused with a promise of free transfers to another transit operator.

Does VTA Run on Sundays and Holidays?

Many VTA routes run on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, but not every service operates seven days a week. Express commuter trips and certain Rapid services may be limited to weekdays.

VTA generally operates Sunday/Holiday schedules for New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day, as indicated by its official holiday guidance.

Holiday rule: Check the actual holiday date and selected bus number. A Sunday/Holiday schedule cannot be used to assume that a weekday-only express service will operate.
