Quick answer

How the UC Merced Bus Schedule Works

CatTracks does not use one universal timetable. Each route has its own stop sequence and departure times. TAPS publishes a Fall 2026 route list, individual route schedules and a Ride Systems/TransLoc real-time tracker.

Weekday campus routes Bobcat Express, C-1, C-2, FastCat, FastCat 2, G Line and Yosemite Express.
Weekend campus routes E-1 and E-2 operate Saturday and Sunday during the regular Fall 2026 schedule.
City connection Route UC is operated as part of Merced’s The Bus system and reaches the UC Merced campus.
Live location Use the CatTracks Ride Systems/TransLoc tracker for bus location shortly before travel.
Important: TAPS states that its Trip Planner is a helpful planning tool but should not replace checking the published route schedule. Verify the actual route schedule before relying on a trip-planner time.

How to Read CatTracks Times and Stops

CatTracks schedule tables show departure times. The bus is scheduled to leave the named stop at the listed time. Riders should be ready before the published departure rather than arriving exactly at the minute shown.

Route Example first published point Example campus arrival/departure Useful stops
Bobcat Express R Street Village begins at 6:29 AM. UTC appears at 6:55 AM on the first listed run. R Street, Merced College, Bellevue Ranch, UTC, Target, Walmart, Amtrak.
C-1 Granville Apartments at 6:20 AM. First listed UTC time is 6:56 AM. Granville, G Street, Walgreens, Tri-College/Mercy, Bellevue Ranch, UTC.

University Transit Center Is the Main CatTracks Hub

UC Merced’s current route page explains that the university-operated CatTracks routes shown with blue headers travel to the University Transit Center. That makes UTC the key place for understanding connections between campus and off-campus routes.

Saturday and Sunday

UC Merced Weekend Bus Schedule

E-1: 8:30 AM–11:06 PM

E-1 provides weekend travel from UTC toward G Street, Amtrak, Downtown, Walmart, Target, Walgreens and Yosemite-area shopping before returning toward campus.

Check E-1 weekend timetable

E-2: 11:05 AM–9:56 PM

E-2 provides another weekend option through Promenade Center, R Street Village, El Redondo, Target, M Street, Yosemite/Cordova and Moraga.

Check E-2 weekend timetable

Weekend does not mean weekday routes continue normally. For the regular Fall schedule, E-1 and E-2 are the dedicated CatTracks weekend routes. Always check TAPS for holiday or break schedules.
Important timetable symbol

What Does “REQ.” Mean on a CatTracks Schedule?

UC Merced’s route tables define REQ. as “Request Stop-Drop Only.” When a later stop shows REQ. instead of a normal departure time, do not treat it as a scheduled pickup departure.

1. Board normally Ride the scheduled trip before the request-only portion.
2. Tell the driver Request the listed drop-off location while you are already on board.
3. Do not assume pickup REQ. means request stop/drop-only in the published CatTracks schedule.
4. Verify late trips Check the route notes because request-stop rules can differ by run.
Late-night example: Bobcat Express includes specific request-stop notes after certain evening trips, including a 9:20 PM Amtrak departure with request service to listed residential stops. Read the route notes instead of relying only on the time row.
Real-time bus location

How to Track a UC Merced Bus Live

TAPS links riders to the CatTracks Ride Systems Tracker, which currently redirects to the TransLoc-powered live interface. Use it after identifying the route you need.

1
Open tracker

Launch the official CatTracks real-time route tool.

2
Choose route

Select Bobcat Express, C-1, C-2, FastCat or the route you need.

3
Find vehicle

Check the map for buses currently reporting location.

4
Match your stop

Confirm the correct side of the road and direction.

5
Recheck

Live position can change, so check again before walking out.

Schedule vs live tracker: the schedule tells you when a bus is planned to depart; the live map helps you see where a reporting vehicle is now. Neither should be treated as an absolute guarantee during traffic, construction or disruptions.

CatCard and public fare

How Much Does CatTracks Cost?

UC Merced students, faculty and staff can ride CatTracks without an additional ride charge when they have a valid, legible CatCard. TAPS also allows members of the general community to ride CatTracks for a cash fare.

Your CatCard functions as your CatTracks pass.

Faculty / staff $0 extra Valid CatCard required

Keep the card legible and ready when boarding.

Non-UC rider $2 Per ride

General community riders can use CatTracks by paying the published fare.

Child age 3–12 $0–$1 Depends on accompanying adult

Merced city bus connection

Route UC and Merced “The Bus” Connections

UC Merced works with Merced’s city transit system. Students, faculty and staff can use Merced’s The Bus free with their CatCard. TAPS identifies Route UC as the city route that directly serves the UC Merced campus.

Route UC TAPS lists regular Monday–Friday service from approximately 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Free with CatCard UC-affiliated riders swipe the CatCard at the reader next to the city-bus driver.
Transfer locations TAPS highlights connection opportunities around Merced College, Target/Merced Mall and Walmart.
Route-planning trick: if CatTracks does not directly serve your origin, look for a city-bus connection to Merced College, Target/Merced Mall, Walmart or Route UC, then connect toward campus.

Useful CatTracks policies

Bike Racks, Standing, Food and Safety Rules

Bicycle racks Most CatTracks shuttles have racks for up to three bicycles, first-come first-served. Bikes are not allowed inside the bus.
Beach cruisers / motorized bikes TAPS says beach-cruiser-style bicycles are not allowed on the racks because of size/weight, and motorized bicycles are not allowed on board.
Standing Standing is permitted only when seats are unavailable. Riders should use provided handrails.
Seatbelts TAPS recommends passengers use installed seatbelts.
Food and drinks Food and drinks are permitted, but open containers—especially liquids—are not permitted.
Driver breaks Riders are asked to exit while a driver is on break so the bus can be secured.
Safety: do not run in front of or chase a moving bus. TAPS specifically reminds pedestrians to stay out of the bus and bicycle lanes on Scholars Lane.
Campus boarding point

University Transit Center at UC Merced

The University Transit Center, usually shown as UTC in CatTracks schedules, is the central campus timepoint for the university-operated bus routes.

  • Check whether the schedule says UTC North or UTC South.
  • Confirm your route before boarding.
  • Match the destination and direction.
  • Use the live tracker when several buses are present.
  • Give yourself extra time when transferring between routes.
  • Do not assume every city bus uses the same campus stop.
Delays and special schedules

Check CatTracks Updates Before Important Trips

Construction, semester changes, holidays, finals and special schedules can change CatTracks operations. TAPS says pertinent delays and special schedules are posted through its website and social channels.

Construction Road work can reroute buses or add travel time. TAPS issued a 2026 construction advisory affecting several routes on Yosemite Avenue.
Academic breaks Summer, Thanksgiving, winter break, finals and university holidays may use reduced or special transit schedules.
Live map Use the real-time tracker shortly before leaving rather than assuming the vehicle is exactly on the printed schedule.
This guide does not claim that service is operating normally right now. Same-day conditions can change after publication. Recheck TAPS and the live tracker for a time-sensitive trip.
