Weekend and academic calendar service

Does the UTRGV Bus Run on Saturdays, Sundays and University Holidays?

The standard Vaquero Express FAQ says regular services operate on university school days, study days and final-exam days, but not during weekends, official university holidays or between semesters.

However, the newer Fall 2026 timetable explicitly lists selected new Saturday connector trips. Therefore, weekend availability should be checked route by route rather than treating all campus buses as entirely weekday-only.

Monday–Friday Regular published Vaquero Express and VOLT services, subject to academic operating dates and route-specific Friday cutoffs.
Saturday Certain new Weslaco/Brownsville connector departures are listed for Fall 2026. Do not assume all main-route or VOLT services operate.
Sunday, university holidays and breaks No regular campus shuttle service should be assumed. Confirm any special operation directly with UTRGV.
Semester dates matter The published Fall 2026 timetable runs August 26–December 10. Service between semesters or after the posted effective period requires a new schedule. The university can also revise service dates, Friday hours and vehicle availability during the semester.

How to Plan Your UTRGV Shuttle Trip

1 Choose campus

Identify where you are starting and where you need to go.

2 Match route

Use Vaquero Express for intercity or VOLT for on-campus trips.

3 Check day

Select the current fall schedule and Friday/weekend rules.

4 Prepare ID

Bring your scannable university or accepted government ID.

5 Arrive early

Reach Vaquero Express boarding 15 minutes ahead of departure.

Example: Edinburg to a Brownsville class

If your class begins at 10:00 AM in Brownsville, the official 7:30 AM Edinburg departure is scheduled to arrive at 9:00 AM. This allows about one hour for boarding delays, walking to class and local campus movement. The 9:00 AM Edinburg departure would not arrive until 10:30 AM and therefore would be too late for that example class.

Example: Brownsville to a 2:00 PM Edinburg appointment

The 11:00 AM Brownsville departure is scheduled to reach Edinburg at 12:30 PM, leaving approximately 90 minutes before a 2:00 PM appointment. This is a scheduling example, not a promise of on-time arrival.

Always check the return trip When you travel between campuses for an evening class, appointment or event, verify the final return departure and Friday service cutoff before starting your trip.
Safety and rider policies

Important Rules for Vaquero Express and VOLT Passengers

Use designated stops Vaquero Express buses do not stop at arbitrary roadside locations.
Bring your ID Vaquero Express riders must provide a scannable ID at every boarding.
Capacity limits apply Seating and vehicle availability are limited. Arrive ahead of the scheduled time.
Service animals UTRGV’s Vaquero Express FAQ permits service animals; it does not generally authorize emotional-support animals to ride as pets.
No package courier service The bus system cannot be used simply to send items between campuses without a passenger.
Wi-Fi is not guaranteed UTRGV says it is working to restore Wi-Fi on Vaquero Express buses. Do not assume onboard internet is always available.

What if the bus is full?

UTRGV says it may arrange additional vehicles for eligible waiting passengers who arrived at the designated stop before departure, subject to availability. If you arrive after departure and the bus is full or gone, you may need to wait for the next scheduled trip.

What if you leave something on a shuttle?

For lost belongings on VOLT, the university directs riders to UTRGV Police Department lost and found. For an incident or concern on Vaquero Express, contact the Transportation Services office with the travel date, route, approximate time and bus number if known.
