Carry the correct fare and expect to pay again for a separate ride when the cash-fare rules require it.
Contactless and Mobile Payment
The Rapid accepts supported tap-to-pay bank cards and wallets, including Apple Pay and Google Pay. Use the same eligible card or device to receive the applicable daily fare cap and transfer benefits.
Verify current official fares, reduced fares, fare caps, and accepted payments.
Scheduled Time vs. Real-Time Rapid Bus Arrivals
Scheduled departure: the time listed in the published timetable. Estimated live arrival: a prediction based on real-time bus data where available. An estimate may change as traffic, detours, delays, or vehicle assignments change.
Use The Rapid’s official real-time map, myStop or recommended Transit app.
Select the numbered route, SL Silver Line, or LL Laker Line.
Match the bus destination or direction shown at your stop.
Confirm the intersection, station, stop name, or stop ID.
Review prediction and detours shortly before walking to the stop.
How to Ride The Rapid: From Planning to Arrival
First-time riders can follow this simple workflow instead of guessing which stop to use.
Enter your origin and destination in the agency Trip Planner or Transit app. Compare walking distance, route, transfers, and expected total journey time.
Select your route, direction, date, and exact stop. Review bus frequency and the last return departure before committing to a late trip.
Have your Wave card, eligible contactless device, or exact cash ready. Be aware of different boarding procedures at designated BRT stations.
Check the route number and destination headsign. Wait where the driver can see you and stand back until the bus stops completely.
If transferring, confirm the next route and its departure time. Fare transfer benefits depend on your payment type and current operator rules.
Prepare to exit at the intended stop, follow bus instructions, and use a marked pedestrian crossing to reach the other side of the road.
Street-Crossing and Station Safety
Never cut across active traffic lanes to reach a bus. At center-running BRT stations, follow the pedestrian crossings and signals provided at the station. Missing one bus is safer than running into traffic.
Rapid Central Station: Grand Rapids Map & Directions
Rapid Central Station is a practical starting point for many Grand Rapids riders. It is located at 250 Cesar E. Chavez Ave SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
The map below shows the central station’s location, not the complete bus network. For route-specific stopping patterns and transfer stops, use the official system map.
Rapid Bus Delays, Service Changes & Holiday Schedules
Rapid bus travel can be affected by roadway closures, construction, special events, weather, missed trips, and route-specific detours. A live bus prediction is not a guarantee that a particular stop remains open.
Some buses may use temporary streets or skip normal stops. Read the alert for the affected direction and replacement stop.
The Rapid lists no fixed-route service on certain major holidays, including Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day. Verify any current-year exceptions.
New seasonal books and service periods can change first/last trips or routing. Confirm the schedule’s effective date before relying on an old PDF.
Check The Rapid’s current Alerts & Detours panel before boarding.
Accessible Rapid Bus Travel
Passengers using wheelchairs, mobility aids, or other accessibility accommodations should verify vehicle access and the specific boarding stop. An accessible bus does not always mean every temporary stop, sidewalk, or crossing is accessible.
The Rapid advises riders to ask the operator for a boarding ramp when needed. Check special access guidance for Silver Line and Laker Line stations.
Eligible riders aged 65+ or with qualifying disabilities may use the reduced-fare program. The current published base reduced fare is $0.85, subject to verification.
The Rapid offers a separate shared-ride paratransit service called GO!Bus. Eligibility, advance reservations, and fares differ from fixed-route bus service.
