Find the Right RIPTA Route, Departure Time, Stop and Live Bus Before You Travel
RIPTA connects Providence with communities across Rhode Island, including Pawtucket, Warwick, Newport, Woonsocket, URI, Narragansett and Westerly. But the fastest way to plan a trip depends on whether you are using a frequent city route, commuter express, Flex zone or special service.
This guide separates the scheduled timetable from live bus predictions, explains Wave transfers, identifies airport and intercity routes, shows 2026 service changes and helps you avoid using an old schedule when a route has been revised.
If you already know the route number, open RIPTA’s official schedule directory and choose that route. If you only know your starting point and destination, use the Trip Planner instead of guessing which bus passes nearby.
Know the route number?
Open RIPTA’s route directory for the current timetable, map, direction and route-specific alert information.
Do not assume every route was updated on the same date.
Current RIPTA pages still show different effective dates by route. For example, Route 1, the R-Line and Route 24L show January 17, 2026 schedules, while Route 20 and Route 60 pages still identify September 27, 2025 schedules.
1I know my bus number
Open the route page and verify its effective date, direction, timepoints and any active alert.
2I only know the destination
Use RIPTA’s Trip Planner. This prevents choosing a route that passes near the destination but does not provide the best trip.
3I need the next bus now
Use real-time prediction tools after finding the exact route and stop.
4I am commuting from a Park & Ride
Look for an “x” Express route and verify that the trip operates on your weekday and peak period.
5I live outside a normal bus corridor
Check whether a Flex or Flex On Demand service covers the origin and destination.
6I am going to an airport, ferry or train
Plan the full connection, not only the first RIPTA bus.
RIPTA service-class decoder
Rapid, High-Frequency, Local, Express and Flex Are Not the Same Type of Bus Service
RIPTA uses different service categories because a downtown frequent route works differently from a peak-only commuter express or reservation-based Flex trip.
Rapid BusFrequent all-stop service
RIPTA’s schedule legend describes Rapid service as regularly scheduled service stopping at all bus stops.
Current example: R-Line Broad/North Main.
High-FrequencyFrequent fixed-route service
RIPTA’s general schedule legend describes high-frequency routes as all-stop service operating every 20 minutes or better on weekdays.
LocalRegular neighborhood service
Local buses follow published routes and serve designated bus stops, but frequency can vary substantially.
ExpressLonger-distance commuter service
RIPTA describes Express routes as weekday commuter routes with express segments, generally focused on peak travel.
FlexZone-based flexible service
Riders may use scheduled Flex stops or reserve a pickup/drop-off within an eligible service zone, depending on the specific Flex program.
SpecialRoute-specific service
School, beach, event and other special services can follow rules and operating calendars that do not match normal fixed-route service.
Service-category labels are only a shortcut.
The generic RIPTA schedule legend describes Rapid service as 10 minutes or better on weekdays, but the current R-Line service plan includes approximately 12-minute peak, 15-minute midday and 20-minute nighttime weekday intervals. Always trust the route-specific schedule over a generic category description.
Schedule freshness
Check the Effective Date Before Using a Saved RIPTA Timetable
RIPTA normally adjusts service several times per year. A route that has not changed may continue using an older effective date, while another route may receive new trip times.
R-Line
Jan. 17, 2026
Current route page identifies the R-Line schedule as effective January 17, 2026.
Route 1
Jan. 17, 2026
Eddy/Hope/Benefit currently shows a January 17, 2026 schedule.
Routes 20 & 60
Sept. 27, 2025
Their current route pages still identify September 27, 2025 schedule documents. Use those pages rather than assuming the date itself makes the schedule obsolete.

How to Read a RIPTA Schedule Without Boarding the Wrong Bus
RIPTA’s online trip tools organize schedule searches by route, direction and timepoint. A timepoint is useful for reading the timetable, but the bus may serve many ordinary stops between the major locations shown in the schedule.
1Route
Match the complete route number or letter.
→Direction
Choose inbound, outbound or the displayed destination.
TTimepoint
Find the closest major scheduled location.
SStop
Confirm the actual boarding location.
LLive prediction
Check where the vehicle is before leaving.
!Alert
Make sure the stop or route is not detoured.
Confirm the schedule effective date.
RIPTA route pages do not all use the same timetable date.
Select the correct service day.
Weekday, Saturday, Sunday and holiday trips can differ substantially.
Read the destination sign.
RIPTA advises riders to check the route number and route name displayed above the windshield.
Arrive at least five minutes early.
RIPTA specifically recommends being at the designated stop at least five minutes before the scheduled arrival.
Use a timepoint only as the schedule reference.
For an intermediate stop, use the live prediction or estimate from nearby schedule points.
Check alerts immediately before departure.
An event or weather detour can change the boarding street even when the timetable has not changed.
Wave versus cash
RIPTA Fare: Why a $2 Wave Ride Is Different from Paying $2 Cash
The base amount may look identical, but the transfer value is not. Cash is charged for each boarding. Wave gives one hour of unlimited RIPTA rides after the initial $2 deduction.
Wave Full Fare
$2
1 hour of unlimited rides
Tap a Wave smart card or scan the Wave mobile app when boarding.
Earn As You Go tracks spending so riders do not pay more than the applicable daily or monthly cap.
Cash Fare
$2
Per boarding
Exact change is required.
Cash does not include a transfer, so boarding a second bus normally requires another cash fare.
Two-Bus Trip Example
Cash
$4
Bus 1: $2
Transfer to Bus 2: another $2
Example assumes two separate cash boardings.
vs
Wave
$2
First boarding: $2
Additional rides during the one-hour fare window: included
The second ride must fall inside the applicable Wave period.
Current RIPTA Fare Products
Wave Full Fare$2
One hour of unlimited rides.
Wave Day Cap / Pass$6
Unlimited eligible travel until 2 AM the following day.
Wave Monthly Pass$70
Calendar-month fare product / cap structure.
Which RIPTA Bus Goes to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport?
Route 20 is named Elmwood Ave/T.F. Green Airport and provides a direct RIPTA airport corridor from the Providence side of the system.
PVDProvidence
Begin from the correct downtown Route 20 boarding location.
20Elmwood Avenue
Follow the Route 20 corridor toward Warwick.
AIRT.F. Green Airport
Confirm the airport-direction destination sign before boarding.
14Route 14 Alternative
Route 14 serves an Airport Interlink stop on Jefferson Boulevard; riders can use the Skywalk connection to the airport terminal.
Airport rule:
do not plan a flight connection using only a scheduled arrival time. Add buffer for road traffic, boarding delays, baggage and walking from the bus/interlink location to the terminal.
Route 64 — Newport/URI Kingston
Connects Newport with the University of Rhode Island/Kingston corridor and provides access to destinations including Kingston rail connections.
Cross-state planning:
Route 24L connects to Fall River, Massachusetts. If continuing to another carrier, do not assume the next bus will wait for a late RIPTA trip. Build transfer time into the itinerary.
On-demand and flexible transit
RIPTA Flex Is Different from Waiting at a Normal Bus Stop
Flex was created for communities with limited fixed-route service. Depending on the zone, riders can use scheduled Flex stops or arrange a pickup/drop-off inside the eligible zone.
Flex On Demand Pilot Zones

URI / Narragansett / South Kingstown
204

Call
401-784-9500
ext. 1220.
Reservationists are available weekdays during RIPTA’s published reservation hours.
Fare
Flex On Demand charges the same $2 one-way base fare as regular fixed-route service and accepts cash or Wave.
March 9, 2026 change:
RIPTA eliminated scheduled timepoint stops for Flex 204 and Flex 231. Riders on those services now need to reserve an on-demand trip through the app or Flex reservation system.
Typical pickup estimate:
RIPTA says most Flex On Demand riders wait about 5–15 minutes, but demand can increase the wait.
RIPTA’s website provides a “Where’s My Bus?” workflow, and RIPTA also lists third-party applications using transit data. Real-time predictions should be checked after you have identified the correct route, direction and stop.
RIPTA Website
The homepage provides Trip Planner and Where’s My Bus functions for route and stop searches.
Live prediction disappeared?
The vehicle may have lost tracking data, ended a trip, been reassigned, entered a detour or been removed from service. Check the next scheduled trip and RIPTA alert page.
Do not describe a live prediction as guaranteed.
Scheduled departures, GPS-based estimates and service alerts are different sources of information.
Where routes come together
Major RIPTA Transfer Centers
Kennedy Plaza — Providence
Central downtown transfer point used by many RIPTA routes.
RIPTA currently lists the Intermodal Building as open 8 AM–5 PM daily.
Pawtucket-Central Falls Transit Center
Served by routes including 1, 71, 72, 73, 75, 76, 78, 80 and the R-Line.
Riders can connect with MBTA Commuter Rail service.
Newport Transportation Center
Important transfer point for Newport-area routes such as 24L, 60, 63, 64, 67 and nearby services.
Check the exact bay or stop letter.
Route pages can identify different Kennedy Plaza stop letters by route and direction. Route 1, for example, currently uses different northbound and southbound stops.
Fixed-route accessibility
Riders who can use the regular bus network can plan trips through the normal RIPTA routes and request accessibility assistance where needed.
RIde ADA Paratransit
RIde serves eligible riders whose disability prevents independent use of fixed-route buses or access to/from a bus stop.
ADA service area
Complementary ADA paratransit generally operates within three-quarters of a mile of a fixed route and during the fixed route’s operating hours.
RIde Fare
$4 for each one-way paratransit trip.
Advance reservation
Trips must be scheduled in advance. Same-day ADA RIde service is not provided.
RIde Anywhere
RIPTA also operates a separate RIde Anywhere program for qualified riders, expanding transportation beyond the normal ADA corridor.
RIde reservations:
401-461-9760
.
RIPTA publishes reservation hours of 8:30 AM–4:30 PM Monday through Saturday, with Sunday voicemail reservations during the same period.
Bikes, Strollers, Animals and Basic RIPTA Boarding Rules
Bicycles
RIPTA says all buses are equipped with bike racks.
Bikes must fit the rack and may not exceed 55 pounds under the current Rack-N-Ride rules.
Rack full?
Non-folding bicycles cannot be brought inside the bus when the rack is full.
Strollers and carts
RIPTA instructs riders to fold strollers, carriages and shopping carts before boarding and keep aisles clear.
Animals
RIPTA’s published rider rules permit service animals accompanying riders with disabilities; other animals are not generally permitted under the basic bus rules.
RIPTA’s Basic Boarding Sequence
Arrive five minutes before the scheduled time.
Look for a designated stop marked with the RIPTA logo.
Read the destination sign.
Match both the route number and route name.
Board through the front door.
Have Wave, cash or another accepted fare product ready.
Move away from the entrance.
Keep priority seats and wheelchair areas available for riders who need them.
Request the stop about one block early.
Pull the overhead cord once to activate the stop request.
Exit through the rear when practical.
Wait until the bus is fully stopped and the doors are open.
New to RIPTA? A Bus Buddy Can Ride the Trip with You
RIPTA launched its free Bus Buddy program for riders who want hands-on help learning the system. Staff can assist with trip planning, schedules, finding the stop, fare payment, transfers and knowing when to get off.
Who can use it?
First-time riders, seniors, students, people with disabilities, commuters and anyone learning a new trip.
Plan ahead:
RIPTA encourages riders to request a first Bus Buddy trip at least one week in advance.
Rhode Island weather can change the route
Snow, Storms and RIPTA Service Suspensions
Winter weather can do more than make a bus late. RIPTA may detour many routes, temporarily stop serving individual streets or suspend the entire network when road conditions become unsafe.
Stop detour
Snowbanks, parked cars and unsafe streets can prevent buses from reaching a normal stop.
Route detour
RIPTA can reroute a bus around hills, narrow roads, bridges or streets that have not been cleared.
System suspension
In February 2026, RIPTA suspended all service during severe post-blizzard conditions before later restoring limited operations.
During a major storm, stop using the printed timetable as your primary source.
Check RIPTA alerts, real-time information and local emergency travel restrictions before leaving home.
Select weekday, Saturday, Sunday or holiday service.
Confirm inbound/outbound or final destination.
Find the actual boarding stop, not only a timepoint.
Arrive at least five minutes early.
Check live bus information.
Review active route alerts and detours.
Prepare exact cash or Wave before boarding.
Allow extra time for airport, rail or intercity transfers.
Check whether an express route is peak-only.
Reserve Flex or RIde service when required.
Common schedule problems
What to Do When Your RIPTA Trip Does Not Match the Schedule
The bus does not appear
Confirm the route operates on the current day and that you are reading the correct effective schedule. Then check live tracking and alerts.
The bus is on another street
Look for an event or weather detour. Temporary routing can bypass the normal stop.
The app and timetable disagree
Determine whether one value is a scheduled time and the other is a live prediction.
You missed an Express bus
Many Express routes are peak-oriented and do not simply repeat every few minutes. Check the next scheduled trip before waiting.
Your Flex stop disappeared
Flex 204 and 231 moved away from scheduled timepoint stops in March 2026 and require on-demand booking.
You paid $2 but were charged again
Cash is $2 per boarding. Use Wave when you need eligible rides inside the one-hour unlimited-ride period.
You are at Kennedy Plaza but cannot find the bus
Check the route-specific stop letter. Different directions and routes can board at different stops.
The schedule link or PDF does not open
Return to the official route page. RIPTA’s stable route page is more useful than relying on an old bookmarked PDF URL.

Which RIPTA bus goes between Providence and Newport?
Route 60 is the primary Providence/Newport route. Route 24L also serves a Providence/Newport/Fall River regional corridor.
Does RIPTA go to Massachusetts?
Yes. Route 24L connects Newport, Fall River and Providence, including service to the Louis D. Pettine Transportation Center in Fall River, Massachusetts.
What does the “x” mean on a RIPTA route?
Routes such as 9x, 12x, 59x, 61x, 65x and 95x are part of RIPTA’s Express service category. Express routes are designed for longer-distance commuter trips and can include express route segments.
What is RIPTA Flex?
Flex is zone-based public transportation for areas with limited fixed-route service. Depending on the service, riders may board at scheduled Flex stops or request a pickup/drop-off within a designated zone.
What is Flex On Demand?
Flex On Demand is RIPTA’s app-based microtransit service in selected Flex zones. Riders book a trip within the zone and receive a pickup location and estimated vehicle arrival.
Can I take a bike on a RIPTA bus?
RIPTA says all buses have front bike racks. Bikes must comply with RIPTA’s Rack-N-Ride requirements, and a non-folding bicycle cannot be brought inside when the rack is full.
Does RIPTA run on holidays?
RIPTA generally observes Sunday schedules on recognized holidays where Sunday service exists. Some routes with no Sunday service may not operate.
Are RIPTA buses affected by snow?
Yes. RIPTA may delay, detour or suspend routes when road conditions are unsafe. In severe weather, check RIPTA’s active alert page instead of relying only on the printed timetable.
What is RIde Paratransit?
RIde is RIPTA’s ADA complementary paratransit service for eligible people with disabilities who cannot independently use the fixed-route network or travel to and from a bus stop.
How do I report something left on a RIPTA bus?
Contact RIPTA Lost and Found at 401-784-9500 ext. 1133 and provide the route number, direction, date, approximate time and a detailed description of the item.
Why does my route page show an older effective date?
RIPTA does not necessarily revise every route during each seasonal service change. A route can retain an older schedule date if it was not changed. Use the current official route page rather than assuming an older effective date automatically means the schedule is invalid.
