Quick answer

Use the Correct NJ TRANSIT Tool for the Information You Need

A PDF schedule, trip planner and MyBus prediction answer different questions. Using the wrong tool is a major reason riders see apparently conflicting times.

Know the route number Open the bus schedule selector to view the official timetable PDF, route map, directions and timepoints.
Open Bus Schedules
Know the origin and destination Use the Trip Planner when you do not know which bus route, transfer or combination of services to take.
Open Trip Planner
Know the five-digit stop ID Use MyBus to see GPS-based predictions or the next scheduled buses serving that exact stop.
Open MyBus
Need the nearest stop Use Service Near a Location because timetable PDFs show key stops rather than every intermediate bus stop.
Find Nearby Service
Need the ticket price Use the Trip Planner or official fare tables after identifying whether the trip is intrastate, interstate or intracommuter.
Open 2026 Fare Tables
Need delay or detour information Check current travel alerts separately from the printed timetable.
Check Bus Alerts
Do not treat a PDF time as a live prediction. The PDF is the planned schedule. MyBus may show a GPS prediction, while an alert can report a detour, deleted stop or canceled trip.

How to Find an NJ TRANSIT Bus Schedule by Route Number

Open the official Bus Point-to-Point page. Visit the NJ TRANSIT bus schedule selector.
Select the bus route number. Route numbers can serve different communities, terminals and direction variants. Confirm the route description beside the number.
Open the official PDF timetable. The document normally includes the route map, zone boundaries, key-stop timepoints, service-day tables and footnotes.
Choose the correct direction. Match the final destination shown on the bus rather than relying only on inbound, outbound, northbound or southbound.
Select weekday, Saturday or Sunday. A route can have different first trips, last trips, frequencies and branches on each service day.
Check the timetable effective date. Search results can retain old PDF links after a schedule change. Reopen the official route selector when the document appears outdated.
Read every lettered footnote. A letter beside a trip may identify a short turn, limited pattern, school trip, different terminal or stop exception.
Check live information before leaving. Use MyBus and the alerts page after identifying the correct route, direction and stop.
PDF schedules show key stops, not every bus stop. An intermediate stop may be located between two printed timepoints without appearing by name in the timetable.

How to Read an NJ TRANSIT Bus Timetable

Direction Confirm the destination heading above the schedule.
Service day Choose weekday, Saturday, Sunday or holiday.
Timepoint Match the numbered column to the route map.
Trip row Read horizontally across one complete bus trip.
Footnote Check letters and symbols beside the times.
Zone line Count every fare-zone boundary crossed.
Your stop is between two timepoints Use the earlier printed time as a planning reference and arrive at least five minutes early. MyBus can provide a stop-specific prediction closer to departure.
A dash appears in the row The trip may not serve that timepoint or may use another route pattern. Do not treat a dash as a missing printing value.
The same route has several destinations Read the bus destination sign. Some trips end early, use another terminal or follow only part of the full route.
The PDF and MyBus time differ The PDF is scheduled time. MyBus may be using GPS data affected by current traffic and operating conditions.
The timetable shows a terminal gate Recheck terminal monitors and current advisories because gate assignments can change temporarily.
The trip crosses a zone boundary Each boundary increases the number of fare zones. Ask the operator or use the Trip Planner when uncertain.

How to Find the Correct NJ TRANSIT Bus Stop

Use Service Near a Location. Search an address, landmark or location through the official nearby-service tool.
Confirm the route number on the stop sign. One intersection can contain several stops serving different directions.
Record the five-digit stop ID. Almost every NJ TRANSIT bus stop has a unique stop number used by MyBus.
Check the destination direction. The route number can be correct while the stop serves the opposite direction.
Look for a temporary-stop notice. Construction, parades, utility work and road closures can move the boarding point.
Arrive at least five minutes early. Stand on the sidewalk, away from the curb, and signal the operator as the bus approaches.
Never stand in a traffic lane or run after a departing bus. Confirm the stop location before the scheduled arrival.
GPS and scheduled arrivals

How to Use NJ TRANSIT MyBus for Live Bus Times

MyBus uses the five-digit stop ID to show buses approaching that specific location. GPS-based predictions are available when operating data is being received.

Official website MyBus Web Tool Select the route, direction and stop or enter the five-digit stop number.

Open MyBus

Text message Text the Stop ID Send the five-digit stop number to 69287. Standard carrier messaging charges may apply.
Route filter Stop ID + Route At a busy stop, text the stop number, a space and the route number to narrow the results.
Scheduled marker Asterisk Meaning An asterisk indicates a scheduled bus rather than a GPS-based real-time prediction.
MyBus limitation: the official texting page says MyBus is unavailable on mini-bus routes 878, 879, 890, 891 and 986. Each phone number is also limited to 12 text responses per day.
No prediction does not prove that service is canceled. The bus may not have started, GPS data may be unavailable, or only the scheduled trip may be displayed.
Zone-based bus fares

How NJ TRANSIT Bus Fare Zones Work

The price is based on the fare category and the number of zones traveled. Each zone boundary crossed adds another zone to the trip.

ZONE 1 ZONE 2 ZONE 3 ZONE 4 ZONE 5
Count the starting zone and every boundary crossed. Confirm the exact result through the Trip Planner or bus operator.
Intrastate Travel remains within New Jersey. Northern and Southern Intrastate fare tables are different.
Interstate Travel crosses between New Jersey and New York City or Philadelphia. Northern and Southern Interstate tables differ.
Intracommuter A separate fare structure applies to specified commuter trips from the U.S. Routes 9 and 18 area toward Jersey City, Weehawken, Hoboken or Newark.
Do not estimate the fare from miles alone. Two trips of similar distance can cross different numbers of official zone boundaries.

Current One-Zone NJ TRANSIT Bus Fare Examples

These figures illustrate why the route’s fare category matters. They are not a universal price for every trip.

Northern Intrastate Adult, one zone
$1.90
Southern Intrastate Adult, one zone
$1.90
Northern Interstate Adult, one zone
$2.20
Southern Interstate Adult, one zone
$2.30
Intracommuter Adult, six zones
$8.45
Fare Category 1 Zone 2 Zones 5 Zones 10 Zones
Northern Intrastate $1.90 $3.00 $4.95 $8.15
Southern Intrastate $1.90 $2.65 $4.55 $7.45
Northern Interstate $2.20 $4.20 $8.45 $15.80
Southern Interstate $2.30 $3.70 $7.60 $14.30
Use the table only after confirming the correct fare category. The official Trip Planner is safer than guessing whether a route belongs to the Northern, Southern, Interstate or Intrastate table.

First-time rider sequence

How to Ride an NJ TRANSIT Bus

Identify the route, destination and fare zones. Save the PDF schedule, stop ID and expected ticket price before leaving.
Arrive at least five minutes early. Stand two or three feet from the curb at the designated stop.
Check the route number and destination sign. Many routes have more than one destination or short-turn pattern.
Signal the operator. Wave from the sidewalk as the bus approaches. Never step into the traffic lane.
Allow riders to exit first. Let customers using mobility devices or strollers board before other riders.
Pay or scan the fare. Scan the activated mobile or paper ticket, tap an accepted payment method or deposit exact cash where allowed.
Move safely into the bus. Use handrails, remain behind the white line and keep bags out of the aisle.
Request the stop in advance. Press the signal strip or nearest stop button after the preceding stop.
Wait for a full stop before standing. Use the handrail and step directly onto the sidewalk.
Never cross directly in front of the bus. Move to a designated pedestrian crossing after the bus departs.

Wheelchair Access, Kneeling Buses and Access Link

Accessible fixed-route buses NJ TRANSIT states that its buses have kneeling capability and are accessible with lifts or ramps.
Request the kneeling feature Ask the operator to lower the entrance when the first step is difficult.
Mobility-device securement The operator can assist with securing a wheelchair or other mobility device in the designated area.
Priority seating Priority seats are located near the front. Ask the operator for assistance when the area is occupied.
Accessible terminal gate Call 973-275-5555 before using PABT or GWB Terminal when gate accessibility guidance is needed.
Access Link Access Link is ADA paratransit for eligible riders unable to use local fixed-route bus or light-rail service.

Read Access Link Guide

Accessible bus does not guarantee an accessible stop. Construction, curb conditions, slopes and temporary stop locations can affect boarding.

Bicycles, Strollers, Bags and Luggage

Front bicycle racks Most buses have a front rack. Bicycle space is first-come, first-served and there is no additional bike fare.
Notify the operator Tell the operator before loading or unloading a bicycle. The operator can give instructions but normally cannot leave the bus to load it.
Bike restrictions Bikes are not permitted on articulated buses, mini-bus routes 878, 879, 890, 891 and 986, or suburban-style buses traveling to and from PABT.
Undercarriage storage Some cruiser buses have under-floor luggage compartments. Ask the operator before placing or removing a large item.
Small bags Keep bags with you and out of the aisle, doorway, priority-seating area and mobility-device space.
Strollers Allow riders using mobility devices and strollers to board first and follow operator instructions when space is limited.
Hoverboards are prohibited on NJ TRANSIT buses, trains, light rail, Access Link vehicles and NJ TRANSIT property.
